View Full Version : Solitude Tuesday

Seems we have two participants so far. MacDaddy, where you at?

I'm interested in seeing where exactly this Honeycomb Canyon lift is at. So far I'm under the suspicion the lift is all smoke and mirrors. I've talked to two people so far who saw no sign of it in the shown area.

Anyways, I'd like to have a significant Minion crew to rip apart the mountain next Tuesday.

I'll be carrying my radio, possibly even screaming out obscenities on it?

Solitude Tuesday, that's where it's at...

BobMc,

I was in Solitude at Thanksgiving and saw the lift. The upper terminal is right at the top of Sunshine Bowl. I don't know what the vertical rise is, but the resort is saying that it is a very steep lift.

I know from your other posts that you ski Solitude on Tuesdays. I dont't live locally, but I will be there several times this year. I usually ski Saturday through Tuesday (half day on Tuesday). Maybe we could hook up for a morning of skiing this year.

Release,

Anytime you're here and skiing Solitude on a Tuesday let me know. I'd love to hook up for some turns.

Holy Shit!

Damn fella's, was it a good day?

All you suckers up at Alta, Pppfffhhhttt!

Pretty much all of Solitude was open, all day long. Usually I hate advocating Solitude. But, I just can't this time!

Today I skied in some awesome conditions, with some awesome people.

As much as I hate the new Honeycomb Canyon lift I like it. I know, it's blasphemy. But, it does make for quicker laps.

Thanks fellas,

I'll be skiing Solitude tomorrow until about 1:00. I'm staying in the village so I plan to get started first thing. How about hooking up?

I have been skiing here since Saturday. Conditions have been pretty marginal, but there was some soft stuff lingering in the Headwall Forest. We've been getting snow since about 2:00 this afternoon, but man is it heavy. Weather forecast is good with snow continuing this evening so hopefully tomorrow will be good.

Also, I may not be able to access this message board later tonight, so in case I miss you I will be wearing a dark green Mountain Hardware jacket with a silver Briko helmet. I'll try to have change for a nickel.

Another Tuesday and another some gotten (TM: PhUnk). Pretty damn good one this time!

After drinking with MacDaddy till 3am I finally passed out in his basement bedroom. I awoke at the crack of 9, feeling a bit woozy.

We made the obligatory stop at McDonalds, I of course opting for the usual...

Once we arrived at Solitude we began putting on gear, when all of sudden without a warning...

My McMuffin decides to see the light of day. A couple kicks in the snow and the offending blot is covered. I was feeling much better now. Time to ski!

Our first run down it was quickly surmised that this must be how Oregonians feel. Heavy wet snow on the lower half of the mountain.

We rode Eagle express up and ran down Powderhorn bowl to the Powderhorn lift. There we quickly recognized Release, a holler of nickle changing and the game was on.

Release was a bit worried about keeping up, the first run down that was definitely recognized as not a problem. Even though he's a resident of Arkansas the man can hang.

The Summit lift and Honeycomb Canyon held good snow all day. Later in the afternoon the sun finally shown through.

MacDaddy and I were riding the Summit lift, when suddenly the sun cleared. We had a full view of what had been had and what hadn't. The far side of the Evergreens (Scree Slope) was pretty much untouched. We ran a few laps through the area...

http://www.outdoorsinutah.com/solitude001.jpg

The lower half of the mountain set up like concrete. The run down at the end of the day had my legs begging for mercy. Tough conditions.

All in all, a pretty damn good day.

BobMc,

Thanks for the turns. Although it was short, it was great to meet you and MacDaddy - true inspiration. As I was headed down the canyon that afternoon I had visions of you guys bustin' the thick powder with the hill all to yourselves. My weekend was too short as usual, but alas I'll be out again soon.

Ok, here we are again, Sunday night and Bob's drunk. I've had a cold/flu for the last two days. I went without beer on Saturday night, it had no effect on my flu. So, tonight I've decided to try beer therapy. It seems to be working, I'm actually feeling pretty good.

So good in fact, that I'm calling any Salt Lake punks out early! Come on up to Solituesday! Possible snow on Monday night and Tuesday morning. It should be gooooood...

MacDaddy, D-Day, Spatters, Powho, BumZ, anyone else? (Non-Salt Lakers welcome as well)

Twasn't a shat Tuffman, twas a puking. I can't count the number of times I've puked in resort parking lots. I'm not sure if it is the drinking or the lack of sleep that usually causes it?

I pretty much live on Beer and Cigarettes. With a diet like this I have to expect some puking now and then.

Regardless, major fun with you boys last week...

Tuesday the 18th report:

Today was another fine day in the Wasatch. It's days like this that remind me why I moved here long ago. The day started innocently enough, myself awakening to a bit of rain in the valley.

I awoke slowly, the feel of water in the shower finally tickled my hungover mind. After I finished showering I felt alive, ready to take on the world. What is next? Time to get blazed, dull my mind and focus it on the task at hand.

I loaded all my gear into the truck, park myself in the drivers seat. Suddenly my sloth of the week before becomes evident. It appears I am once again out of gas. Each week I seem to put just enough gas in my truck to make it to the mountain and back. You'd think I'd learn...

Once my vehicle's and my own appetite was satiated the day began. To my surprise I managed to keep my McMuffin in my belly, no parking lot deposits today!

The snow appeared once I hit the mouth of the Big Cottonwood Canyon. It wasn't much more than a spitting, but enough to lift my spirits.

I hurried up the canyon a bit, late for an eleven o'clock appointment at Powderhorn. Surprisingly enough the road was clear, no snow or hidden ice to worry about. This had me worried a bit, the fun days are usually begun with a hair raising drive.

Once I arrived at Solitude I found my fears were unfounded, plenty of snow everywhere. I hurried to gear up and skated on down to the Eagle Express. I arrived at the Eagle at 10:50, doing the math in my head. Given the 6 minute ride up I knew I had 4 minutes to get back down to the Powderhorn lift.

I arrived at Powderhorn right on time. Once arriving I see two guys standing around looking uphill. One is in a one-piece and appears to be about 60 or so. The other guy is in his late 40's. I surmise that neither of these folks is "Broke Ass Student."

Suddenly I see two guys ski up and the first tells his skiing partner to go on ahead. The first guy then commences to look uphill. I figured I'd made my mark right there. A quick request of the change for a nickel and we were riding the lift.

Will (Broke Ass Student) and I had a fun few hours of exploring Solitude. I enjoy showing new people around the resort, in Will I found a willing pupil. We made a couple runs down the Headwall Forest/Evergreens and then two runs down Honeycomb.

This placed us at about 1:30, just in time to meet MacDaddy at the Eagle Express. Once we hooked up with MacDaddy we took a few fun runs, the highlight being a run down from the Powderhorn lift into the Summit lift.

At the top of the Summit we hooked up with a friend of MacDaddy's. We all agreed on a run down the right side of Honeycomb. I was with the group throughout the entire hike. Once we arrived at the end of the hike MacDaddy's friend left us in the dust. His name was Rich and this guy left us to eat his chewed up line. Will and I were both beat by this point, but both agreed we'd not have been able to keep up with him even fresh.

Oh well, so be it. We still enjoyed untouched shots all to ourselves all the way out Honeycomb.

It was quite a day, numerous faceshots and at least a couple waist deep turns. I had a hell of a good time skiing with Will, John and I'd like to say Rich.

Beers at the Porcupine with MacDaddy put a fitting end to a fantastic day.

The most untracked skiing I have ever had. So deep, so uncrowded... unbelievable.

And Macdaddy thanks for showing me around too, couldn't keep up with you and Rich so I never got to say thanks.

That was some damn fine skiing, nice work minions.

Damn, the season is coming to an end. Tomorrow I'll be skiing at Solitude for the last time of the year. As near as I can tell tomorrow will be my 13th Solituesday this season.

So far this year I've been pretty lucky. I've gotten both storms and friends, each pretty valuable in their own right. I've skied with a number of people on my Tuesday days off. I've yet to meet a minion/maggot I didn't like.

Enough of the misty love fest. Anyone wanna come to Solitude tomorrow!!!???

MacDaddy and I will be arriving near first chair (near). As near as I can tell Solitude received about 19 inches in the last storm. Think we can find some fresh snow? Yup, this snow fell in the last two days, none today. Trust me, fresh will be found...
