So I need some new bindings this year, and it looks like these are what I want. I have read the reviews of each and understand that the decision between the two may just come down to personal preferences. But I am hoping that there are people out there that have skied both, and can give solid feedback as to which is the better choice. I have skied lots of Salomon bindings, and for the most part they have been good (except the new tow piece that came out a few years back, no bueno). I have also skied the Rossi freeski 140 (and the look px12). They were good as well, although I did take a shot to the ass with that giant dong thing on the heel, during a funky landing, which hurt like a MFer (I think I may have just opened the door for public inter-web ridicule for that statement).

me:
5'9"
170
old, but not over the hill
love the pow, but like the park as well
throw 3s, ski switch, but mostly just try to ski fast and bounce from feature to feature

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

I have skiied both and it's no comparison. FKS is way better, more natural, better flex, shorter footprint, best release at right times and I will never use another binding

still haven't decided which ski (flat of course), i want but picked up the Look Pivot 14 (same thing as FKS), at my local ski shop season opening sale and ski swap.

Cant say i tried the STH, the only Solly of interest to me is the upcoming slackcountry Duke/Baron killer.

I haven't skied any of the new solly's, but was on the 14's from about 2000 to 2005. Unless they have completely overhauled their design (which I'm pretty sure they haven't), there is no comparison, as suggested above. The elasticity of the heel of the fks is unmatched. I have felt multiple times my ski torque off my foot a significant amount to the point where I thought i ejected, only to unweight and have it snap back into place. This doesn't happen on most bindings, but it does on the fks. Others either direct that torque directly into your knee, or they prerelease. I'll take the turntable anyday.

I have had enough days at the top of a chairlift on a powder day fiddle-farting around with the toe wing adjustments on sallys to get rid of slop (driver toe doesn't self-adjust so you will have to do this). That plus the excellent elasticity of the FKS heel = no more sallys for me.

While I think that the Pivot/FKS heel is a great design, I also fell on one once, and it really didn't feel very good.

Rectum? Damned near killed 'im!

=No more dildo heels for me.

Driver toe + FKS heel = the ultimate maggot binding. YMMV

If I had to choose, i'd go with the fks, but I think alpine clamps get overthought alot. Its not like your skiing is going to suck if you choose the sally.

the old 4 hole geze FKS toe is much better than the driver IMO

Damn, I wish I'd seen this thread yesterday. Just bought a new pair of Solly 914 Drivers because my old 912 ti's wouldn't pass inspection (heelpiece had cracked after 5 seasons), and knowing nothing about alpine bindings I just went with basically the same thing again.

Question: my main reason for picking the Solly's to begin with was that they're supposed to be light, as well as a good all-around binding. I have an artificial leg and weight really affects my ability to move that ski quickly. For future reference, are they really lighter? Or should I have gone with the Rossi/FKS on all counts and I just fucked this up good?

see, I like the toe elasticity of the sally (but stay away from the spheric design IMHO) I feel like the main risk to knees is twisting and the center of rotation should be at the heel, not the toe. I also don't think a driver toe and a fks heel would work well together.

If you are on Steep Terrain in sticky pow and need to put your Ski back on, the STH will be eisier to get back into.

In any other catagory The Look Turntable binding is better. Its safer.

there is a reason they brought this binding back to market. The design is near 40 years old.

IMHO, they're both great bindings. (I own both.)

If you can afford either one of them, you're already ahead of the curve. Pick the pretty one.
