Tsunami relief?
Jackson Hole avalanche center?
Avalanche accident victims? fund (hard as there is not a central charity to give to)

Others???

Not Tsunami Relief.
As harsh as it may sound I am highly dubious that any more than 20% of the monies given to this cause will actually make it's way to those who need it, and that would be because it somehow slipped through the cracks and the respective governments and warlords just missed intercepting it.

Also, our contributions would make a bigger difference in a smaller arena.

My $0.02.

get truth a job fund?

j/k...tsunami relief is needed more than anything, though a more snowcentric cause might make more sense. Are there any local causes in JH that are worthy?

Yeah - the victims' fund sounded like a noble cause but I also found little central methodology to determining how to give.

I know (think) that there is a fund for Trevor Peterson's son and know that there is a fund for Alex Lowe's children.

I would like to consider those.

How much money are we talking about? If it's only a couple thou, it'd be cool to give it to one kid or kid's education fund.\

Anyone agree?

I agree that a more local/snowcentric charity would make more sense. What are people's thoughts on T-shirts as a fundraiser? Probably something with the Mini logo on the back and a TGR logo on the front (with TGR permission). Or, if we can get some of the creative types to come up with something different.

I'm willing to lend assisstance in the fundraising efforts.

I would definitely shoot for something where the amount that gets raised would be significant for that charity. Raising $2k for the Red Cross or similars, while noble, wouldn't even register on their scales, while that much could make a huge difference for small, local, grassroots orgs.

FYI, teledave, I hear you on a lot of the money, supplies not making it to the people that really need it, but there actually are some organizations, mostly religious-affiliated ones, that were in the affected areas doing work before the tsunami hit. Those have several advantages - mainly their personnel and infrastructure are already in place and they are already supported (ie, paid) to do that work by those churches regular offerings. Most of them guarantee that 100% of the donations go to the victims/cause.

If you are looking for snowsport charities, your local avalanche center could use donations. Or someone could set up a scholarship to send someone to an avalanche instruction course. Too many folks dying this way lately.

I personaly like the idea of giving to the Jackson Hole avalanche forecast center for several reasons.

1. Getting local establishments to help with the cause will be much easier. This could be very important as I have ideas of getting bars, etc to give a percentage of what we spend there to the charity.

2. Need, TGR is currently the largest corporate donor to the avalanche center, something we are quite proud of. However it is kind of depressing since the number isn't really that big. We (the maggots) could potentially become the biggest group sponsor. They are a worthy group out there trying to educate us and keep us safe. Hell, maybe I could even line up a presentation at a bar some night.

What say you?

I fully support this idea for the listed reasons. I think staying local is key. Also, although it is selfish, I do like the idea of actually having an impact.

I actually think Tsunami relief is a great idea. Shows the breadth of the support of this collective - that we're not just interested in snow.

yes - frustrating that perhaps all the money is not going where it should, but it's fairly easy to figure out which groups are more reputable than others, And even if only 20% goes directly to victims, that will be more than they have otherwise.

I also think it would be great to find a sponsor to MATCH what the maggots raise. maybe that would be TGR, Powder, or maybe it's someone's company they work for. Company's love to do matching funds - makes their (and our) money go farther.

My vote goes to the Bridger-Teton Avy Center. I found out today that 75% of their funding comes from donations. Based on what Frozen has told me about the amount TGR (the largest corporate sponser of the center) contributes, unless there are a lot of really rich people who care about the progression of avalanche forecasting and snow science that throw down some serious cash, the center will definitely benefit from our donations. This year the center might not be getting any money from the Bridger-Teton National Forest (damn budget cuts!) This area has been and will always be an asset to avalanche research and forecasting. I think the maggots should contribute to the continued growth of snow science and avy awareness because it has affected our community in many ways. If we choose to give our money to the avy center I could probably get a forecaster or 2 to give a talk on avalanche activity/awareness during the summit if people are interested.

I know a few people who are involved with the adaptive program here, so I will find out where their funding comes from and if they would also be a good candidate.

Charity begins at home. I vote avy center.
For every avy center that goes down, people we know could die.
