6 weeks post-MCL tear, new snow in MI and I'm itching to ski. I have a donjoy brace for the leg, should I or shouldn't I??

Well.....how does it feel? How bad was the tear? (i.e. Grade I, II, etc.)

It feels ok--especially with the brace on. It was a partial tear, Grade II maybe?

Im almost 1 week out of a grade II MCL and Im already itching to get after it. Depending on pain I fully expect to be skiing before four weeks is up. This may not be the smartest thing to do but Ill get a brace and hope for the best. Im generally a pretty quick healer so Im pretty sure Ill be fine by then, plus straing out at these damn mountains with mounds of snow on the way, fucking sucks.

It helped that the snow stayed far, far away for the past 6 weeks. I'm itching to ski and the weather looks good next week and the kids and hub are not working/schooling so we might go for it. Wish me luck if we do.

Good luck! You should be fine if you don't do anything too extreme. 6 weeks is a good long healing period.

I should update my MCL injury thread. In a nutshell, my doc said wait at least 4 weeks before getting on snow and that it would likely take 4-6 before it was healed(grade 2) enough to ski. At 3.5 weeks I couldn't take it anymore and went out on groomers by myself with a donjoy. Felt sore still but I noticed my mind was the big issue in recovery. I am now close to 8 weeks out and I my skiing feels like it's about back to early season form. I think it took me about 5 weeks and a couple falls before I got to the point of not really worrying about it too much.
A.C. and a couple other knee injury people have told me you usually come back stronger and I already see signs of it in my skiing. Don't think it's from the pt since I was already working out just as much before the injury, but I think it's that being on the sidelines makes you appreciate it more and you get after it more.

six weeks would be close to being healed for a grade 2. I would say give it a try but don't push right away. But only give it a try if thee is no more pain with activity, no pain to the touch and no swelling. And if you do give it a try and do feel pain, don't push it. If you are feeling pain even with the brace on it is not ready yet. Good luck.

Thanks. Tested it yesterday at Mad River Mountain in OH. Did just fine. I'm back to skiing this winter!
