Just thought I'd share this. A nurse recommended vitamin E cream for my scars post op on my last surgery. Every doctor I mention it to scoffs, but I swear, since I got my stitches out I've been rubbing it into the scars, and they are healing great. If nothing else you give the wounded area a little massage. It's a small thing but I think it helps.

a friend of mine blew her knee out like 3 or 4 times racing and she would always rub cottage cheese on her knee post-surgery. supposedly it really helped, with what i dont know, but she did it every time and swore by it.

just an added technique if you didnt know about it already.

about 7 - 8 years ago I took a gnarly highspeed fall in New England which resulted in me scraping my face along the snow for about 50 feet on icy death cookies. Lost all the skin on the bridge of my nose and massive amounts on the right side of my face......damn, I felt gnarly walking through the lodge after that :yourock:

anyhow yeah, I used some sort of Vitamin E cream throughout the healing process and wa-bam...no scarring.

Funny you mention massaging where your stiches were too on your knee. My PT recommended the other day that as the steristrips fall off, I should periodically rub the scars since a little bit of scar tissue (duh) can form underneath them impeding movement....I don't know how true this is...but wtf, it doesn't take much effort to do it.

This is one of my biggest problems (I guess it's not an issue for some people). The tunnels/portals from the arthroscope feel like rocks under my skin (actually the lateral one broke up and now it's just the medial one that's a PITA). They ultrasound them, massage... (and I massage them at home all the damn time) it just takes an eternity for my scar tissue to break up - and for a while they were attached from the surface all the way down, which was inhibiting my ROM some too. Just know that there's a limit to how much/hard you should massage them - I've let them go too crazy at PT if you end up bruising the scar tissue it just gets worse...

Vitamin E oil/cream is great, but it only helps the skin on the surface. Which healed up really quickly and nicely for me. It's the scar tissue under the surface that sucks.

Yeah, I prematurely ripped the steri strip off one of my scope sites (doh!) and the scarring there is not so good and building up underneath. My pt guy was pissed! I thought he was going to punch me, "I TOLD YOU TO LET THOSE FALL OFF ON THEIR OWN!" Hence the vitamin E and massaging

Rubbing vitamin E or vitamin E cream on a scar definitely DOES make a big difference in many cases. When my daughter had surgery done with a plastic surgeon, he recommended massaging the scar every day 2-3 times per day with vitamin E (http://www.seacoastvitamins.com/supplement/now-foods-vitamin-e-400-iu-mixed-tocopherols-250-softgels-8929) or some similar moisturizing cream. There are many creams out there that would probably work pretty well, but straight vitamin E squeezed out of the capsule is one of the best and cheapest ways to go. It can be very effective, and I know many surgeons and doctors recommend it.
