A buddy of mine runs the G4 with Freerides and the Denali XT and loves the setup. Unless you plan on doing a lot of very long trips, I say go for it.

I think this is a pretty good point. I ran some flatmounted 900s for about a day on some G4s and it sucked real bad (had the footbed cant cranked forward, which helped a little). If you do it you'll definitely want to mount them forward a bit.

your ski is covered with snow when you tour so it doesn'T really make a change, unless you have to carry them on your back.

rev: you figured out a way to strap the skins on ?

i would mount them a bit foward or install a little heel lifter its true that voellkl are mounted behind other skis.

Plus, Rev called me a pussy.

For this season, anyway, I'll be in alpine boots almost all the time, but I'm still a fan of the heel lifter idea when on freerides.

R, do you know if Cletus has a lifter on the 10ex's I used in SA? I know they're forward-mounted a good bit.

I have a pair of 198 G41 mounted with Freerides and have Denali xt boots.

These are my everyday skiis in the resort and my ski for less than ideal bc days, corn, and scary stuff. (the 190 BigStix 106 come out the rest of the time!)

I don't end up in the back seat very often. I did tele on those skiis for a year before i saw the light and ditched all my tele gear.

As far as weight goes, at 6'2, 250# i figure i got better places to lose some weight than on my skis :D

I tend to break light gear.

Yo Fez, did you mount those on the line (not forward or back)? Did ya leave the toe shim on the Freerides?

Yes to both.

I'm a bit of an unusual situation though. Given both my size and spending the ten years before last on tele gear (maybe a total of 5 days on alpine gear and 20 on snowboards). The Denal/Freeride setup felt bomber to me, i didnt notice any lean angle problems (except that i could really get on them without worrying about landing on my nose).

I never had any problem driving the 198 G41 either as a tele or at ski.

Thanks Fez. I'm still debating mounting mine without the shim (if they ever get shipped to me) for a better angle....

I rock the Snowrangers in a 180 with Diamir IIs and Lowa Structuras. For alpine I ride 190s, but I like the shorter length for AT for weight savings and quickness. The stiffness of the volkls is important for me in BC riding, because variable snow conditions in a place far from rescue can get scary in floppy skis. I have really enjoyed this set up, but it is heavy compared to a K2shucksan/dynafit/g-ride type set up.

I have to disagree with Dude le about weight negated by being covered in snow. A) pushing extra weight is still pushing extra weight, covered in snow or not - there is no threshold, B) on spring corn tours, your skis won't be covered with snow, C) weight on your feet effects your stamina more dramatically than weight on your back.

no lifting/angle change, but did mount forward 2cms; used with AT boots.

G4's and freerides were my touring setup until one of them fell out of my truck. I skiied them with Scarpa Denali's. I had that setup for two seasons and loved it. All this bullshit about AT boots and being in the back seat is exactly that, bullshit. In my experience, being in the back seat has more to do with the skier than anything else.

Go for it cornholio, you'll love it.
