So I've noticed every time I've skied this year when I take off my skis and start walking around my knees just kill me especially on stairs, should I be worried about this? Should I be wearing some kind of brace?

i get that too. but most likely mine are from the metal in my knee. it is probably your miniscus or petela because in some people these are very sensative in cold weather.

I have a similar thing....

Diagnosed by my doctor as "You are 21, your knees are old." Basically my kneecap doesn't track right so it gets aggrevated.

Anyways, it gets bad when I can't get into the gym on a regular basis. When it hurts to walk to class I know it's time to get back in shape. Solution is to wear a neoprene brace with the kneecap hole and pop ibuprofen.

If it really bugs you go to your doc.

How old are you?

I remember when I was a wee-teenager getting severe knee pains from a combination of growing, football and skiing. It would absolutely kill everytime i walked downhill or upstairs. I think putting severe stress on your knees while still growing has a big effect. But since then, even after the added years of hucking, that type of pain has seemed to go away.

So what's my answer, huck more and your knee pain will go away.

Do you mean your knee's hurt when walking around in your boots, or in shoes too? I wouldn't be too concerned about sore knees if it is just when you are walking around in your boots. They put a lot of extra strain on your knees and after skiing all day I think most people feel some discomfort if they don't take them off. If they hurt when you are in your shoes, maybe it is another story. I don't mean to be a dick, but maybe losing some weight could help. (not trying to call you fat or anything, but you would be suprised how much a few extra pounds can fuck up your body)

It hurts almost always with my boots on, not when i'm hiking up stuff, but just walking around and such and about half the time in shoes, as of now its throbbing every once in a while and my MCL seems to be very tender when I touch it, granted I just got done skiing weird snow for 2 days strait. What I'm wondering is if its just the muscles dying and rebuilding themselves or if its an indication of something worse

1 - Stop skiing so far in the backseat :)

2 - Stick to the groomers

3 - What the others said, drop a few pounds

Basically my kneecap doesn't track right so it gets aggrevated.

This was my problem a few years ago... The muscles around my knees developed funny, so one part was stronger than the other, making my kneecaps move funny, hurt like hell to run, knees always cracking and popping, etc. Once I started working my legs more and biking it's pretty much gone away.

you obvioulsy need a bad operation, post haste.

AKPM sounds like one of a few possibilites.

1. Patellar tendonitis, basically a repetitive stress injury as a result of you skiing, both nordic and alpine. Pain would be at the tip of the patella or in the middle of the tendon

2. Patello-femoral tracking syndrome: as another said, the patella is compressed into the joint surface and does not track correctly. Kind of like drving your car with the front end out of alignment, it begins to wear unevenly. Pain wouldbe directly under the kneecap and you may feel a grinding sensation with knee motion.

3. Depending on you age: as Alka suggested, Osgood-Schlatter's Syndrome, inflammation of the bony attachment of the patellar tendon on the tibia. Happens only in adolescents as they are not done growing yet and the patellar tendon attached right on top of the growth plate for the tibia.
Pain would be directly on the large bump on the front of the tibia and painful with all activity.

What to do. No matter which of these you have the treatments are basically the same.

1.Stretch you quads more

2 stretch your hamstrings more, actually as important if not more important than the quads for anterior knee pain.

3. some rest may be required if it is Osgoods-Schlatters.

4.Ib can help but don't take too much. It can irritate your stomach as well as cause other problems with the kidneys with prolonged use.

5 If it doesn't go away go see you family doc. As I said for the Osgoods option. This can be the more serious of the group and may require some rest for it to go away. Generall it occurs in teenagers in the 12-17 yr. old range but can happen to older teens 18/19 if their growth plates have not closed.

for more info google those options I gave you and you should find plenty of stuff.

6. Ice after activity

what i'm really trying to tell you with all this is you need a bad operation, post haste.

Basom, congrats on the ski day, heard the hinge held up pretty good. How did it feel yesterday? Any swelling?

basom
11-22-2004, 07:39 AM
yeah, graft area swelled like it i did a hard core leg press/step up/plyo session. VMO felt particularily worked after the run. but hey, i got out there.

Cool man, glad you were able to get out. Don't worry about that swelling too much. It should go down with some ice and a day off from working out. Chances are it will swell a bit occasionally at first, but as the graft matures, that will naturally go away.

Just remember from here on in it will only get better.

And you fuggers should have called earlier and came over for a beer!!!!

Yeah I was kind of confused why you would go over the notch on your way to Hanover??? Duh.... I am a dumb ass....

And for next time it is quicker to my house if you go through Stowe and up 100. Granted next time the notch will probably not even be in question but it would definitly be longer to go over the notch from Stowe to my place.

Might wanna lay off on that whole snow-plow thing. It's all parallel turns these days....

AKPM,
I've got the same thing. IT started when I was ski bumming in Banff. The long rides back home after a hard day, with my knee bent 90o would just start throbbing. Stairs and walking around started hurting. I went to physio and found out, like the other guys said. It's patellar femoral. So it's tracking on the outside and not where it is supposed to be. Essentially I was told that my outside quad muscles were stronger than the inside and that I would have to strengthen them. I'm also supposed to roll on a 2L pop bottle to sort of stretch out my IT band. It's too tight. Physio thinks I've torn a part of my tendon the attaches the bottom part of my patella to my shin. so I have a neoprene band that I wear that pinches it so it doesn't hurt as much during activity. IT's a real bitch of an injury. As the other guys said. Lots of stretching and strengthing the other muscles are supposed to fix it.
Hope that helps!

Go to your local bootfitter and see if the canting needs to be modified on your boots.

I'd suggest that you quit spending so much time on them and get yourself some knee pads immediately.

Some elbow pads and a plug may be needed as well.
