Democracy could ‘collapse’ in Greece, Spain and Portugal unless urgent action is taken to tackle the debt crisis, the head of the European Commission has warned.
In an extraordinary briefing to trade union chiefs last week, Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso set out an ‘apocalyptic’ vision in which crisis-hit countries in southern Europe could fall victim to military coups or popular uprisings as interest rates soar and public services collapse because their governments run out of money.

Obama has repeatedly praised economic models that are now FAILING. Hey guys, There are unintended pitfalls of trying to create utopia. Despite the overwhelming evidence that union heavy, government controlled, eco-economy can only fail, Obama will use this oil spill to jam Cap & Trade down our throats - Financial problems in the old media to take over the press - Government cause banking problems to take over the financial industry.......
The definition of insanity is to follow someone else off a cliff. Look at Spain, Greece, pretty much all of Europe for that matter.
“Spain admits that the green economy sold to Obama is a ruin.”
The story goes on to note that President Obama has cited Spain as an exemplar of an ecologically sound energy economy no fewer than eight times.
Spanish economist Gabriel Calzada – for every green job created by the Iberian nation’s massive investment in renewable energy, that transfer of wealth to uneconomic activities cost the economy 2.2 jobs in opportunity cost, as well as direct job losses thanks to the increased cost of electricity

Jimmy, the same issues are approaching your favorite country faster than you can imagine. However, like Benny stated in the Stock Market fail thread, and I paraphrase, "Countries will eventually fail, social unrest and apocalyptic scenarios will unfold, but it will happen in the USA last as we are the "Safe Haven" in the financial World.
I have already told my family once Europe starts to go under, I am selling everything and bugging out to the boonies in B.C. Canada to ride the downfall out. I just hope the guberment doesn't freeze all assets before I decide to split, as always eventually happens.:rolleyes2

I agree with this to an extent, I'm just trying to see how likely people think these scenarios are.
Will the people in these countries accept a lower standard of living/level of government spending, or overthrow the government to put in place a new government that (I'm assuming) promises them no change from their existing standard of living?

I think democracy will go out the window and the new fascist state will repeal many parts of the constitution (2nd amndmnt, etc), seize all public monetary assets, as has been done in every economic crisis in history and will tell the public what they get, period. Individual choice and freedoms will be a thing of the past. The new nationalism will eventually lead us down the road to war.
It has happened before and will again. People like myself, keep hoping we are wrong and it will be different this time. I nervously watch events unfold and hope I can get my family out of here before the shit really hits the fan for the USA. I try and pretend all is well for my families sake, as I don't want them thinking dad is wacko, but I am watching what happens in the World very closely.
