I've been eyeballing these two bikes myself. I'm leaning towards the ASR-5 for now, because of how stiff it is supposed to be (12x142 rear option, tapered HT) and I like the geo a lot more. I might try to test them head to head in Moab this fall if I have the means.

The Giant is superior as far as suspension design goes. The 575 is a great bike but is still single pivot.
After riding Maestro for the last 2 seasons, it'd be really hard for me to go to a single pivot like the ASR 5.
Not saying the ASR 5 will hold you back, we all know it is capable of being built stupid light and will probably be extremely fun. I just feel the way Maestro works is so much more neutral feeling when compared to the Yeti design.
After riding some Yeti stuff, I do like the craftsmanship, company attitude and fit but it'd be really hard for me to go ASR5 over a well built Trance X.

I've been riding Giants since they introduced Maestro in 05. I could care less about branding, it's the ride that counts. Never ridden a Trance X but it seems like a killer trail machine. I've only ridden my new Rx twice but I think Giant nailed it with this bike. Could only imagine the same for the 2010 TranceX.

Not hating all Haros, just my gf's. In Haro's defense, this is an XS so maybe the other sizes are better.
http://www.singletracks.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/img_6434.jpg
Your bike looks nothing like hers though.
To drop the seat, you have to cut the seat post down so it doesn't ram the shock when compressed. When you do this, the seat post isn't long enough to extend to a comfy climbing height. I guess a gravity dropper would fix this but there is no reason to have to buy a GD to overcome a design flaw. Kind of a silly situation for a 6" AM bike.
On her bike, the welds are sloppy and there are areas that probably could be welded and are not.
Haro only has one shop in Boise and they are not that great so proprietary parts are hard to get.
A lot of forks hit the down tube.
There are spots in the frame where mud/water collect and stay.
The frame is creaky.
For what it is, it's heavy.
I wouldn't pick this bike for any friends of mine. With that said, she doesn't mind it but she is coming off an old Jamis XC bike with a blown shock. She's pretty fast.
Enough tangents...Rev, buy a cool bike and get amped for spring!

^^^ Yep, figured it would be something like that. Haro has some really weird F/S designs.
I find it funny that I like this rigid 29r SS so much. It's not that light, parts are only adequate (nothing fancy on it), but I like riding it more than the Intense 5.5 I built up last year. And I like that Intense more than the 575 it replaced.
Anyway, lots of good F/S designs out there, and Giant's Maestro suspension seems to work really well.

I've got that black-on-black scheme on my X2. Can't understand why they changed it - it's beautiful, especially with some anodized hubs (red or blue if you want to match the Fox parts, bright orange if you like to clash as I do). The new paint schemes make it look more like a typical big-factory bike, which is a shame since it's still the same killer frame.

Ugh. What are you looking for? Do you want a more plush ride or a more platformy ride? What are the trails like you'll be riding on? As noted earlier, the ASR 5 has really great geo, but the suspension may feel a bit race like. In addition, there are some conflicting reports that the bike cannot really be run with a 140mm fork, which makes it less trail bike.
What about a Santa Cruz Heckler? Simple single pivot design, not the best geometry, but at a good price point. Not sure how much a Blur LT2 will cost you (might want to pm flowtron)?
Hey Reverand, what happened to your stoke man?

Bummer dude.
I'm assuming we have similar access to various companies, so a couple ideas:
-Have you checked with Go-Ride or similar shops for Trances? You'd have to drive down to SLC to get it but might be worth it. Even retail, they are good deals (if on sale a bit).
-ASR5. I want one. Bad.
-Lightweight build on a Transition Covert. Might be too much crossover with the MX though.
-Blur LT2

In addition, there are some conflicting reports that the bike cannot really be run with a 140mm fork, which makes it less trail bike.
From what I understand, the question with 140mm forks was only with the carbon version. It actually lists the geo for a 140mm fork in the owners manual pdf on their website.
Why I want one:
- Eventually run a TALAS with 140-120-110, 140mm = 67 HTA 13.3 BB, 120mm = 68 HTA 13 bb, so super versatile geometry.
- Option of running regular QR dropouts or 12x142 thru axle rear = super stiff
- Tapered HT
- Comes with the nicest F120 stock, even on the enduro build.
- really the only weakness of the Enduro build is the SRAM Attack shifters, which could easily be replaced with SLX's or XT's
I kinda like stiffer suspension and snappy response from a bike. The slacker geo is what really gets me though, super low and slack yet stiff and snappy when used with a 140mm, which I would switch to for shuttle runs or long drawn out descents, but most of the time I would probably leave it in the 120mm setting, especially when the trail is not consistently downhill or uphill.

I've been trying to figure this out too. The specs are gone from the website, but still in the PDF manual and some dealers' websites still claim compatibility with the 140 fork.
How many 120mm forks come in a tapered version? Some recent reviews of the 5 on mtbr suggest the bike really comes alive with a shorter, stiffer travel fork.
I still want one, but I haven't made up my mind about the fork yet. When I rode the Trance X, it seemed like a great bike and price, but didn't quite do it for me. I didn't have the shock or fork set up for my weight, so that may have a lot to do with it.

My totally unfounded guess on the Yeti removal of 140mm is marketing. Create more separation from the 575 since I'm sure the ASR5 is cannibalizing 575 sales.

Only reservation would be small bump compliance. From the weekend of riding I did down in lovely Sun Valley I'd be looking for something with great small bump action that doesn't get affected by pedaling. I have not swung a leg over a Kona in years so my recommendation might be bunk.

So, after a few laps the verdict is in and the Dialled Alpine is a winner! It feels really comfortable like I've been riding it for awhile...which I haven't. So I did a comparison. with Maxxis 2.25s and a Lyric 160 the geo is within a 1/4" on almost every aspect with my Enduro SL which I really like.
I stacked it up against the TransAm numbers and it's pretty close to that too. I couldn't tell if Transition listed their numbers with a 130, 140 or 160 fork. The only difference I really saw was the Tranny had a lower bb height, slightly steeper HA and a shorter wheelbase. Those numbers actually matched the online specs for the Alpine but I put a 160 U-turn Lyric on it which slackened, raised, and lengthened just a bit.
My two pennies are that a 24 or 25 pound TransAm would give you nice climbability weight wise and that fun geometry for the way down. While fun, I don't think you necessarily need the rear end squish around there especially when holding the Prophet too.
Sorry to muddy the waters. Come ride either of my bikes or I could bring one up the next trip and you could see if the geo works for you.

Admitted SC Fanboi here, but what about short shocking a Blur LT2?
I did NOT need to know about this. Drooool...

I think all they are doing is having the stock shock reduced. Numbers listed below were poached from the dude who did the LT2c.
Stock BLT2c 8.5” x 2.5” (216x 63mm) = 140mm travel
Short BLT2c 7.875" x 2.0" (200x 50mm) = 112mm travel
I guess the shock got re-valved when dropped too. Knowing my Nomad it might actually help the VPP small bump feel having the shorter i2i aka starting further into the curve right off the bat.
This all came from wanting to have SC make a new Blur 4X. If anything the LT2c looks dead hawt and would be way stiffer than your boner. I'm all about using the word boner today, better start writing some business email : )
Here is the empty beer thread.

FWIW, I think the TransAM numbers are with a 140mm fork. The Lyrik on mine feels juuuust right. The small frame is pushing 6# - getting one to the 24-25# mark would take much cash, or small fork/skinny tires or a SS setup. Mine is built fairly light, other than the extra half pound of Gravity Dropper and a Solo Air Lyrik adding more up front. Single ring, and lots of little ti and alu bits here and there and it's still near 28#.
That said, it's a fantastic riding bike. If I lived somewhere with less chunky rocks, a Pike or Revelation up front to drop some weight and slackness would work beautifully. Well, it wouldn't be too bad here, but I'm used to the Lyrik at this point.
I think the Alpine is a bit more refined, a touch lighter. No SS option, doesn't have the integrated headset - if that matters to some folks. The integrated on my TransAM is the first for me, and it's working fine, no issues. Otherwise pretty damn similar.

Am I the only one that would take a Trance X over the Yeti (with a shock change of course)?
No. Rev, stop the analysis paralysis and just buy the damn Giant already.

Thanks, Peaches. I had heard from flowtron the short shocking method. Pechelman should look into it as he cries emo unicorn tears for SC no longer making the 4x.

Keep up man...Rev had decided on the Giant, but they are out.
My vote goes to a short shocked Blur LT with a RS Revelation. Go full XC on wheels and everything else in the build.

So I'm looking at the DHX Coil on my Nomad, and I'm thinking...
What would a short air or coil shock and a 140 or 150 fork make it look like?
138mm rear travel I think.
What it would do to the BB height and HTº? Who has skills, free time and wants to punch numbers?
I'm thinking the results may cause at least a chubby if not a full boner.
Oh BTW Nomads have ICGS-05 and weigh a whopping .5 pounds more than a LT2. And are stiff and tough as shit. Hell, I could totally change the personality of my Nomad with a shock switch, fork drop and single ply tires. It would be lightish, low and slack... hummmm...

I guess it would depend on whats in your quiver. Add a full on DH bike to your stable and going to the xc-extremo build on your Nomad makes sense. One bike? Keep it as is.
Perfect world is three bikes...er four bikes if you include the bar bike/ cruiser.

I was more thinking that a short shock could get a different personality from the Nomad. Tough but more low slack trail. And really a short shock BLT2 is way more that bike than a Nomad would be.

I know I'm late to the party, and decisions have been made, but I'm a bit unsure as to the giant hate by some in here! for the money, spec, warranty, and flat out performance, there's really no company coming close to what giant is offering out there! and that's through their full line up....I ride an 08 glory dh and it's a solid solid bike.....also rode a anthem xo last spring and was blown away by how fast it climbed, seriously any amount of energy put in just made it go faster up hill, and it performed very very well descending, even with a shorter fork and skimpier tires than I would've preferred....managed a 2nd place in the pemby ice breaker toonie race on it, which is pretty much a best ever xc for me....mind you the regular beasts weren't out that day! giant's are pretty much the defacto whistler bike, they are everywhere because they are the real deal.....whether people on here think they aren't worthy or not! :) if I wasn't about to drop too much money on new camera gear, I would be ordering, or already have, an anthem x....have fun on the new rig regardless, new bikes rule!
