View Full Version : Has anyone demoed an ASR-5?

I've been narrowing my search for a FS frame for a while. I ride the usual spots near Indiana, my local trails at Winona and Franke, Ft Custer, and Brown County. We have roots, some rocks, small drops, and still get some decent vertical in a ride, but it is a constant up and down. I also have family in Asheville and ride out there at least once a year.
Most of the people I ride with have different Trance models and a couple Epics. I was almost set on a 575, but then I saw some of the ride reports from Interbike about the upcoming asr-5. I race now, but you never know about succumbing to peer pressure and signing up for one.
Any thoughts?

I have only screwed around on one in the parking lot, but they look great. Yeti doesn't let stuff out of the bag until it is pretty dialed and they seem to be pushing it pretty hard, lots of stuff like "I can't really see me needing my 575 again" being thrown around. I think it would slay in Indiana. Build quality on their stuff is top shelf.

Yes.
If you would like to buy my 07 Enduro SWorks so I can get an ASR-5 I would appreciate it.

Scott from Go-Ride has a couple short reviews in the Yeti forum over on emptybeer. If I can figure out a way to pay for it, I will have one for my xc/smoov course Super D bike next year.

If the seattube isn't too long, I will likely be getting one.

Those were the only reviews I've been able to find so far. I was hoping more people got to ride around on one before they're released. Good to know I can trust Yeti on their first year models. I can't help but think the 575 would be a tad bit overkill for Indiana. Assuming the 5 can take the rough stuff better than the average XC bike, that's probably the one I'll be looking for.

i have ridden one. it is an awesome bike.
it climbs very well... like xc race bike good, and decends as well (if not better, less mid stroke wallow) than the 575. it mirrors the 575's geo. i plan to sell my 575 frame and replace it with a 5 this spring. i will build it with a 140mm fork w/ a flat lower, to preserve the 120mm fork geo.
it rides as well as the trance x - thought slightly more "xc", but with better geometry. the 5 climbs better with the propedal on, and descends better with it off. the trance x does not like the propedal i thought - more of a sit and spin ride, where the 5 can both sit and spin, or hammer out of the saddle.
all in all, a 2 thumbs up.

Good to hear the review Marshal, thanks.
nate - actually a 575 would be killer for Indiana as well. A good buddy of mine who used to work for backcountry.com lives in Indy and imported his 575 back there, he kills it on that thing. I ran a Prophet MX in Ohio - basically identical to Brown County trails - and it ruled as well. Another buddy of mine back in Ohio ran a Nomad constantly out there. That said, if the 5 descends as well as the 575, with slacker geo, why not get that extra efficiency?

Hey Marsh - the golden question I can't get anyone to answer...any idea if you can run a 140 on the carbon frame? It's not listed on the Yeti site so I'm assuming no, but it'd be sweet.

Looks like I would need a medium with Yeti's sizing. For reference my 54cm Cross Check fits great with the setback post.
I don't think I could go wrong with either frame. Particle is right, if the 5 descends as good and climbs better than the 575, then I'll probably go with the 5 unless I found a killer deal on something else.

yeah, you would need to be atleast 6' to ride a large. medium sounds like the right call if you are on a 54 crosscheck.
if you need any help picking up a 5, just shoot me a pm, i can definately offer a nice little price on a frame or bike.

Marshall, you hit it spot on with that review. I had the exact same impressions on the usability of the travel the bike has. I feel like I got more out of it than the 575 and the bike seems much more nimble. Win win. I didn't get to do much climbing with it but it was easy to handle on techy stuff and ripped downhills and railed corners. It was so easy to flick around and direction changes were very intuitive, not so much physical.
I am so totally looking forward to getting one! Hmm which color?

man....in the same situation. looking to possibly sell the large 575 and get onto an asr-5.
marshal......can you run the same exact parts from the 575 on the asr-5??? I guess the fork question is the main issue. currently running the Talas RLC 100-130mm but I mainly keep at 130. Will this work with the geometry of the asr-5?
Also.....another quick question. can you get the carbon rear triagle from yeti and replace on an older 575....say a 2006-2007???
I wish bikes weren't so fuckin expensive....and I didn't love new shit. I love the 575 but if I can get the same ride minus 3 pounds......
Thanks man

you can run everything except you would need to order a new lower cup for the headset, probably $35-$45
the 130 would be fine. you can buy the carbon rear end and the retro fit kit, but just buying it to buy it is not smart... you are looking at $500 or so bucks at least. it would save maybe 3/4lb.
