I have an 2006 float 36 r with creaking stanchions.

Option A: get new uppers for around $200 bucks and have a 2-tone older fork (fox doesn't have brown uppers) w/o a sweet qr TA system.

Option B: found a 2009 160mm lyrik solo air for around $650 on the interweb.

I need to know whether the move to a lyrik would be a good one. I feel like everyone is a RS fanboy right now; maybe with good reason? If a float is still the ticket, then I'll probably just grab the uppers.

Side note: can you reduce the travel on a 160mm lyrik? the SRAM tech propaganda shows how to drop the 170mm version to 160mm, but nothing about taking the 160mm to 150mm.

The coil sprung Lyriks feel great, you can lower them with different spacers etc. That being said, I would just replace the uppers on your Fox, from my experience nothing tops them as far as feel goes, and if you're that concerned with it being 2 tone just strip it and repaint it, you will have it apart any way to replace the uppers, order a new sticker kit when you order the uppers from Fox, and it will look like a brand new 36.

Just get VAN uppers, which are black and sort go with everything.

Even if you did get matching uppers they still may not have matched. My new lowers were supposed to be the same color as the old uppers (Float Gold) but aren't. In the end, if it rides well, you'll get over the matching aspect.

If not strip the paint : )

The new RS stuff is very sweet (I'm a very happy solo air Totem owner), but in your situation I would probably just spend the $200. The only question would be how long do you think the Fox is going to hold up with the new uppers? If you have ridden it hard and something else expensive is due to blow up soon it may be worth just getting a new fork.

^Those forks are pretty basic, I would imagine the only thing that could go wrong after that would be the rebound cartridge, replacing those is relatively painless but I have yet to see one fail... My 40 on the other hand has had a few issues with the cartridge, mainly the bladder popping out, a pretty easy fix but it seems to happen fairly often.
