I'm looking for a new receiver in the $200-300 range and really have no idea about what I am looking for.

if you watch a lot of movies you'll want 5.1 surround.
if you have speakers, you need to see how much they can handle and at how many ohms.
how much shit do you need to hook up (VCR, DVD, digi-cable, etc) you'll need enuf imputs.
Im a fan of individual pre-amps, processors, and amps. Way cleaner and tweakable, if any little thing breaks or gets dated (only surround processors really get dated) you can just replace that piece rather than the whole thing. I sure it easily could be more than you are looking to spend (i havent seen any prices lately) but if you are just going to listen to tunes, all you would need is a pre-amp and two channel amp. You would be able to upgrade to 5.1 surround with a few speakers, powered sub, processor, and 3 channel amp.
I just realized that you are looking for a review type site--my bad.
