I'm looking for some bindings for my new billygoats and there are some deals on some salomons. Can anyone tell me the advantage/difference between the STH and Z bindings.

They both suck, and are 90 something percent plastic. The STH supposedly is slightly redesigned and has a slightly beefier construction according to Sally. If you have to go with one of them, i'd recommend the sth, but I would strongly recommend against both of them. Especially if you're mounting them on billygoats, and skiing the terrain its meant to be skied on. I'd go with a 12 din offering from other manufacturers like the marker griffons or 12 din looks or rossis. I love salomon, but other than their high end bindings, these days sally's just aren't that great. My female friend has them, and she cracked the toe piece two days in and she doesn't ski that aggressively. So beware. The toe pieces are prone to exploding.

Thanks for the advice. Backcountry is having a sale - sounds like it's worth the extra fifty bucks or so for the better bindings.

What NJFS said.

Personally, I switched to Tyrolia and Look over Salomon these days.

Tyrolia is plastic, too, but at least you don't get the fucking 7 series toe. You can dress it up all you want, but at the end of the day, it's still dressed up shit.
Oh, not to mention all the elastic travel Tyrolia has. Does the Z toe have any???

pick up some real deal 916s. they are bomber and you can usually find em cheaper than any of the new bindings.

Get 916's or STH16 or something, those will hold you in much better

If you still want 12 din look for some pivots or something but I've never had good luck with sally 12 dins

I''ll be the dissenter - I've had no problems with either STH or Z series binders. They're plenty plasticky, but no more so than any other comparable binding (Rossi / Look, Tyrolia, etc.), and I haven't had any durability issues with them, which I can't say for Rossis. For those of us that don't send it hard enough or weigh enough to need a 16 DIN binding, they're a good option.

Compared to Z's, the STH has considerably more metal in the heal, they have a worm screw (instead of tabbed) forward pressure adjustment, and supposedly the plastic in the toe is thicker, but I can't tell any difference from looking at them.

Exactly. I recommend Peak 15s or 18s, either is a big step up from Peak 12s. Search Head Mojo 15 though(if you care about weight, get 09s, if not it doesn't matter, you can get 08 Tyrolia Mojos re-branded for head for about 135). As for Salomon, STH 16s are good, and STH 14 Drivers are the same with a weaker spring(I think 2010 STH 14s are the 16 housing with 14 spring=Good). These are the only solly bindings you should get: STH 16/STH 14 Driver/914 Lab(pretty much STH 16 with weaker spring too..)/or the older S series(my favorite Salomon binding is S914s probably, they are great. Alot like 914 Labs/STH 16s, but with a bit more metal. I think S916s are overkill(all steel, 6.4lbs). good luck PM me with questions.

Didnt STH= steel toe housing at one point?
Z=plastic.

I'm 160 lbs and 51 years old - as such my DIN setting comes in at 6 - if I'm hearing everyone correctly the 12 din bindings are mostly junk and I'm better off with a 15 or so. Any comments on the Marker Griffons or PX12s. Alternatively, anyone know where I can get my hands on an old set of Look pivots?

I'm the same age, an experienced skier and heavier. I run my DIN at 9-10. 12 max is fine for you (most of my bindings are 12 max) unless you're hucking cliffs. The fine points of clamp quality are more of an academic than practical discussion unless, again, you're pushing them pretty(very) hard. Don't waste your money on race bindings if you're going to be setting them at 6.

Look up the definitive Sally thread.
