I know nobody likes to think about spending an unplaned night out but after my hike in the Adirondacks this weekend where I had to shake my head at all the tourons who at 12:30-1 PM were still climbing up the hill towards a summit that was still a good 1-1.5 hour away with at least a 2.5 hour descent once they made it to the top wearing nothing more then a t shirt and jeans no water food or anything else:rolleyes: I began thinking of what was in my own bag. Sure I had layers, H2O and food, map, compass, leatherman, medkit, headlamp, and duct tape, but unless I could build a shelter out of duct tape and branches I would be pretty hard up had I gotten stuck out there. So everybody what else do I need that could also be used in winter situations as well.(understanding that I always carry a shovel that I could build a snowshelter)

Space blanket/bivy. They're about $5 each and they're very useful in an emergency. Also bring some high fat food - it'll keep you warm. Snickers, 3musketeers, powerbar, whatever as long as it'll help u stay warm.

Buy one of these and toss it in the pack.

It's waterproof, lasts dang near forever, and the funds go to a good cause as well.

at minimum a space blanket and way to start a fire (both heat and method for melting snow). food can wait, but it is nice to have. ideally some medical suplies and a knife too. i don't go out without at least the blanket and a lighter. they're compact and cheap.

Christ, you carry a lot of stuff for a day hike in the Daks. There was a trail, right?

I was the guy in Tevas and a t-shirt heading up at 5pm w/a sixer to catch the sunset.......(actually they're Teva knockoffs)
