View Full Version : Bands you've walked out on

So hop's comments in the moe thread got me thinking, what band(s) have you ever walked out on and why?

I've walked out on a couple of random opening bands at shows, but the one I remember most was Guns N Roses. I went to see them at the LA Coliseum when they played that joint tour with Metallica. Motorhead opened up, then Metallica came on and absolutely rocked the house. GNR was a shell of its former self at that point. Soren was drumming, Izzy was gone.

So here comes GNR thinking it can get up on stage and follow Metallica at this point. Wrong. After about 2-3 songs, there are 70-80 thousand people just sitting down going what the fuck. My friend and I look over at each other at one point and both proclaim how much they suck. Finally at one song break, Axle proceeds to tell the crowd that if they aren't going to stand up and rock out then the bands just going to leave. Needless to say, at that point people started leaving instead. We waited maybe one more song and then took off.

I cant think of too many i left that i went to see, but often if i go to see the opener and the lead band blows or is meh i leave
examples:
After seeing Rancid 2 weeks ago in Philly, we left after 3 songs of Rise Against.

in college I remember walking out before Toad the Wet Sprocket ever played because we came to see the Skeletones open...

I have walked out of a few free concerts because it ws just too crowded or the scene sucked, ie Black keys in SLC

i'm sure there's a ton lost in my dilapidated memory banks, but the one that sticks out the most is Kings of Leon.

they were on, what i believe, was their Aha Shake Heartbreak tour. this was circa 2005 and the gig was at the Fillmore in San Francisco. i remember thinking that they were 1. totally over-hyped (they'd been on the cover of every music mag known to man) and 2. they sounded an awful lot like an unkempt version of the Georgia Satellites. needless to say, i didn't care for 'em much going into the show.

that said, the main reason i was at this show was to see the Secret Machines. they were the opening act (strange double bill, if you ask me) and absolutely killed it with their stripped down prog rock theatrics (they had crazy strobes, so bright i suffered momentary blindness several times during the show...i think they may have had a warning posted when entering the club stating that strobes and extreme lighting were in effect, but DAMN!).

at any rate, SM killed it and then KOL, the headliners, came on. i was bored after 2 or 3 songs and managed to drag my buddy out of the venue with me (he actually wanted to stay and see 'em as he was a bigger fan of them than the SMs).

sadly, most of the time i had to stay for crappy shows as i was usually reviewing them for some magazine.

PS
since then i've developed a tenuous appreciation of KOL. their song "Taper Jean Girl" is total tits (ironically enough it was hearing that song in the cheesy Disturbia that caused me to give them another listen) and their album Only by the Night kinda won me over, as well. Secret Machines still kick mucho hiney in my book, though.

Quite a few, but Blink 182 specifically comes to mind. It was in 1998 at Rodeo Rock and I was torn between which was worse - the band or the cigarette smoke so thick I felt like my eyes were about to bleed.

I almost walked out on Rage Against the Machine. We went to see Wu-Tang open for Rage and had every intention of leaving after their set. Wu-Tang just sucked it hard, though. No ODB, Method Man's voice was fucked, their timing was way off. We made the trip and needed some redemption and on top of that, there was a complete crowd change between bands. Half the place got up and left and were replaced with a different crowd. We didn't want to deal with end-of-show traffic half way through the show, so we stayed. Needless to say, Rage completely fucking killed it. That show altered my music preferences forever.

The last Pixies tour at Red Rocks (2005?), the wife and I walked out near the end. They had the stage presence of 4 corpses that were cashing it in.

I've always loved the Pixies too, so it was especially sad.

I should have walked out on Oasis at RR. Liam was drunk/high and hit about 3% of the notes in songs he's probably sung 3000 times. It was his b-day as announced by Noel - and was apologized for, but FUCK it sounded HORRIBLE.

Béla Fleck and the Flecktones at Telluride Bluegrass.

Hey Bela - It's the Bluegrass fest. Take your funkin electric banjo, get in the pink cadillac and come back later in the summer for the cosmic jazz fusion fest.

Hey, at least the hills around T-ride are a nice place for a walk out and about.

I guess I did walk out on GnR back in 1992 but it wasn't by choice (darn parental rules) and I regret it to this day.

Walked out on Mighty Mighty Bosstones back in 96-97. It was the Let's Face It tour, and The Amazing Royal Crowns, Dropkick Murphy's, and Bim Skala Bim opened. All three of them fucking killed it, MMB drug up onstage down two horns and had the energy of a beached whale. Time to go.

Atari Teenage Riot, although they were opening for Rage so I couldn't exactly walk out. I have an appreciation for harder music, but what they played was just awful and sounded like everyone was just smashing a bunch of random notes all at once.

Jonny Lang, at Targhee Fest a few weeks ago. McMurtry had just laid down a strong set. This relatively unknown band Vedera ripped it up. Sonny Landreth went large. The Wallflowers were damn strong. Then Lang started, all his songs sounded the same, and lame, and the 3/4 of a 2 liter bottle of JQ 1800 margs kicked in... I was down the road. And into the Trap bar, ordered up a double Crown rocks, and the lights were officially out...

I don't really like hardcore in the first place, but Assjack is just terrible. I'd much rather see an extra long Hank III country show than hear 30 seconds of Assjack. It's not like he'd be short on material.

I walked out on Soul Asylum once years before they got big, but that was mainly because I had a bleeding nose that wouldn't stop.

I wish I had walked out on DMB in 2001. I was in the top row of RFK and I couldn't hear a single clear note or word. I was so pissed, worst $45 I've ever spent.

I would have loved to have seen KOL, their old stuff is awesome- milk, soft, knocked up. Too bad you won't ever hear that on the radio.

Heh, back in the early 90's Bosstones played my college so often it was like they were the house band, and people stopped going to see them. I think there was a show with maybe a dozen people watching, and the lead singer tried to crowd surf--ended up with no one but my 165 pound friend holding him up, and he ended up on the floor very quickly.

Only show I've ever walked out on (that I paid for) was Steve Miller band in 93, mostly because they were playing in the most acoustically terrible venue ever created--sound bouncing off the back and returning to the front, complete dead spots, etc. I have no idea if the band sucked or not. They don't do music there anymore as a result.

This makes me a bit sad. I've seen maybe a dozen P-Funk shows, and when they are on it's the greatest party ever. But I have seen them when they are not so good. Never walked out, though I did leave once before an extended encore that came a half hour after their first set ended, and security wasn't letting anyone back in the building. I'll still see them every time they come around, because George just can't have that many years left - I can't think of anyone that has done that many drugs and tours and is still getting it done at that age.
I did leave during a Metallica set, at Lollapalooza '96ish. Spent the whole day out in the sun tripping my nuts off, Wu-Tang killed it, the mosh pit for Metallica was actually tame in comparison. They weren't horrible, though not great either, and the whole crowd was spent at that point.
And I didn't exactly walk out on this, but I am still kicking myself for trading my ticket for Widespread Panic at Crested Butte for a ball of hash, because my friends decided to bail.

Blues Traveler Red Rocks July 4 93 or so, Widespread opened and they sucked too. Holy crap did it sound bad. I did sell a case of beer after the show to pay for my ticket.

Sublime at Ogden Theatre Denver just before he died. I didnt walk out but that was just as bad. I was shrooming and my ride was inside and didnt feel like walking out on Colfax at 1am. They were so doped out at the end and the band yelling "you suck Denver, Fuck you" the bass player mooned the crowd and spread his ass cheeks . People were throwing shit at them then he died and they got popular.

Assjack I stayed until the bitter end and I threw my drink at them at the end I'm glad I didnt get caught, I would have got beat. I was so drunk. I passed out at the hotel and my wife was hanging out with the band on the porch. H III gave me the devil horns from across the parking lot in the morning. They were funny.

Jerry Band in Irvine a year before he died that's up there, cant remember if I walked early but it was bad. LA scene was sketch and jerry was doped out of his gourd. I think they had to revive him at intermission because it was like an hour and a half. I could only imagine how many speedballs.

Benefit for medical aid to Nicaragua.

IIRC, Billy was the headliner and brought the others up on stage in various combinations to jam on the encores. He and Vernon Reid laid into some old Woody Guthrie or union song -- I wish I could remember which one -- like nobody's business.

Luckily I saw them before they started sucking. My first concert: Living Color, og GNR, and the Rolling Stones. 1989 at the LA Memorial Coliseum. 14th row, my ears were ringing the rest of the evening after the show, and I could barely hear the next day. That show was out of control good. Oh and I also got to shake hands with Norm from Cheers.

311 at Holmdel. Maybe 2003. We went to see the openers (MMW and The Roots) who were fucking awesome.

As soon as 311 came on people just started going crazy throwing anything they could find and just decking strangers and shit. 311's sound guy must be a deaf, blind, retarded guy because the sound was high volume noise. You could barely distinguish any actual lyrics or music. So we left.

The order of the days show should have been: 311 opening for me taking a shit in the parking lot followed by MMW and The Roots.

Also, Tea Leaf Green at the Fox in 05 I think. It was their DVD taping show and according to their fans one of the best shows they have ever played. It was a free show so we went to check it out (I saw TLG in 2001 or 2002 in NYC and they were pretty good). Turns out they are fucking horrible poppy crap these days....we heckled for 30 minutes and then left.

Band I would've walked out on, had I not been working the sound board: Dinosaur Jr.

I mixed the now-legendary show at Barnard College 20 years ago. Which is to say, I tried to mix it.

GNR killed it. If I recall correctly I think they were special guests at only the LA shows.

I also was blown away no one watched Living Colour. I don't think it was that no one liked them, but rather everyone was too busy doing blow and drinking Michelob in the parking lot. My brother and I practically had the whole front section to ourselves. Which rocked because they fucking rocked.

And since someone mentioned Everclear, I think I may have walked out on them also. I can't really remember because the show was so fucking terrible I put it out of my mind. I had seen them open for Filter a couple of years earlier when they were still a 3 piece band. They killed that show. Then I'm guessing their record company decided they should add a fourth guy for their 3rd album and get a little more mainstream/poppy. The album sucked balls and so did their tour. I actually almost wept a little at that show because it was sad how fucking much they had sold out and destroyed their band.

Cooper Union? Actually, there's no good reason for that guess, except that it's basically across the street from where I ran into Vernon Reid years ago--and close to CBGB (now a clothing store), where they used to play and where I saw them reunite.

I can tell you that in Cleveland all the old Stones fans fucking hated them (those that were actually in the Stadium at the time, which was maybe 1/4 of the crowd--so maybe all the coke/Michelobheads in the parking lot would've been fans).

Keith Richards has been dead for years. I've seen stuffed animals looking more alive than that dude. George has been on an almost non-stop tour for close to 40 years, while the Stones take time off. And I thought Aerosmith sobered up, right around the time they started having other people write their songs and started sucking donkey balls.
And since someone else mentioned Beck, that brought back a painful memory. Lollapalooza tour, mid '90s, NYC. So bad he was hiding behind a speaker onstage to avoid being pelted by anything the crowd could throw. I couldn't leave as it was a festival and some legit bands were coming on later, but I got as far away from that noise as possible. Still don't know how that guy ever sold a single record.

Everclear - free show in college. Lead singer was seriously all over the place and they were horrible. Think they were seriously not into it since they mentioned the admin had asked they keep the swearing to a minimum...

Citizen Cope - I was tired. His lack of animation and monotone put me to sleep that night.

Avett Brothers - Forced, pouring rain at the PDX zoo. My mom held out for a long time but I finally felt too bad after 8 songs. Of course it was the best set of any of their shows I've gone to.

Depends what you mean by walked out on.

With the exception of Kottonmouth Kings and Mushroomhead, I leave every concert when I feel entertained and am done getting my mosh on. I have never left due to the band sucking, I left before the main band once when there were just 20 people in the whole venue, just wasn't enjoying it.

The only band I've walked out on was Tarentel. They put out two wonderful albums, then got a new drummer who totally destroyed their music. It was so disappointing I couldn't stay to watch.

It didn't help that Explosions in the Sky opened for them (this was back before Field of Dreams) and absolutely slayed the room.

Then I'm guessing their [Everclear's] record company decided they should add a fourth guy for their 3rd album and get a little more mainstream/poppy. The album sucked balls and so did their tour.

Their first album was "Heroin Girl" and about 11 other songs that sounded a lot like it but weren't as good.

The second album was about a dozen songs that weren't as good as the ones on the first album that weren't as good as "Heroin Girl".

And so on.

It's a great song, and I still listen to it, but holy balls were they a one-dimensional band.

I can't think of any times I have walked out. I usually hit the bar and mainline if it sucks. Tossed out of nice onstage hookup at a Beck show at Bumbershoot due to drunk friend. Tossed out of a Snoop dog concert in Brixton, UK due to drunk friend. And the MOZ walked out on a show at the Fillmore in SF because someone threw a rose at him and it hit his thigh.

Not entirely fair on Sparkle and Fade... "Heroin Girl" was great, and "Santa Monica" was the hit, of course, but my other favorite tunes on the album -- "Summerland," "Queen of the Air," and "Pale Green Stars" -- are up there with "Heroin Girl." But the decline after that album -- which is basically a concept album about heroin addiction, as far as I can tell -- is clear and unmistakable.

I really, really wanted to walk out on Lamb of God, but at this particular show they were sandwiched between Arch Enemy and Megadeth. So I did the next best thing and stood in a 45 minute line for Angela Gossow's autograph, which conveniently made it so I wouldn't have to hear any of LoG's set.

Phish last night at Merriweather. What a clunker of a show. Fall '97 has spoiled me.

I walked out of a free Ween show in 98 or 99 at Rutgers university after the third song, and haven't seen them since. I know I have a lot of friends that dig ween, but they just aren't for me.

Not quite. Sparkle and Fade (containing Heroin Girl) was their 2nd album. World of Noise was their first. Both were quality. Their 3rd album, So Much for the Afterglow, was a steaming pile of dogshit and it was all downhill from there.

I walked out on Stromtroopers of Death when I realized they weren't really a white power band.
