Although I'm not too stoked on the job right now, the free trip to Kauai next week will not suck.

So, since I'll have a few extra days, I'm thinking I'd like to do the kayak trip along the Na Pali coast. Apparently this is only possible from May-September, and it sounds like a blast and way more interesting than from the seat of a giant boat with 50 of my closest friends that I've never met before.

Here's the rub - I have never, ever been in a kayak. Canoe, yes, but not a kayak. Now, I'd be doing one of the guided tours, so it's not like I'd be on my own, but is this still a bad idea? I'm in good shape, blah, blah, blah, but just wondering. I was thinking maybe I could do a Wailua river kayak a few days before to get used to it.

According to my landlord, who made this trip this summer, the way to go is with the platform style sea kayak. that way you can paddle with your flippers on and bail off at any moment when a herd of sea turtles swims underneath.

I'm a almost a jong in my kayak but its a river/playboat so different animal than a sea kayak. I assume your going to be in sea kayaks. Those thing are supper long and are made to go straight ( even have a rudder in them). With half decent balance you should do fine.

We just did the hike along the Na Pali coast when I was out there for work. Dunno about the kayak, but any way you can see it sounds like a pretty good idea to me. And if it's a guided thing they should be able to tell you what's up before you spend your money.

Have fun - it's gorgeous there.
