i posted this in another thread, but after i thought about it-> would something like this kill apple?? i mean the only thing they have going for them, besides the cool factor is the "working OS".
thoughts?
it would be nice to have another option besides linux.
it would be nice to have another option besides linux.
well, if you read the article it is linux underneath, on top of which Chrome runs. it's not just the linux kernel either, since Chrome depends on quite a bit of other libraries and GNU gunk underneath. so, basically, you have a linux installation, however minimal, which boots into chrome...
it will take some time before one is able to edit film, compose music and do general tasks in a browser application. apple is safe, at least for now.

Are you fucking whacked?
You've obviously never heard of Shake, Final Cut Studio, Aperture, Logic, Xsan, etc...
It's usually a good idea to know what the fuck you are talking about before making a statement. It makes you look like a fool.

But it certainly gives you something to go ballistic and feel superior about. That is what counts.

what you listed is a small part of apples pie. high end shit does not matter. apple wont be able to survive without the consumers.
oh and logic suks ass compared to protools, cuebase and most other daw programs.

No you are wrong... Apples high end market is exactly why this wouldn't hurt them... If you read the article you would see this is more a direct competition with M$ than anyone else as Apple isn't in the netbook market yet. This is supposed to be a cheap operating system for cheap portable netbooks. The only competition here is M$ and Linux.
Sound like you just have an axe to grind because you haven't brought up one shred of evidence how this would hurt Apple and I don't see any.

no axe to grind, just want to get my max profit. i got in at $80 after they tanked last time.
your point is nutty. are you trying to tell me that every mac owner has it because they use one of the programs you listed? most people get macs not becasue they are good, but cause pc's major flaw-> they take time and know how to keep maintained.
if a pc ran as smooth as a mac, most people who buy macs simply cause they work..the people who dont give a fuck about artsy shit, the people who jsut want to check email and type papers...there is no way they would spent the extra grand for a mac when a pc with equal performance is 1/3 the price. these people are a big share of apples sales.
this is not apple vs. pc
im talking about apples ability to survive. now thier biggest marketing tool is banking off of PC's shittyness. PC's wont be shitty forever...once there is a smooth running PC....then what?

For those that aren't registered with NYT (http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=20815&tag=nl.e589)
This OS is hardly a competitor to Mac or MS. This is pretty much just a browsing OS and I believe it is Linux based. It's something to slap on a Netbook and run with it. I could see myself using it as a secodary OS (ok tertiary), something to boot into quickly on a netbook to check e-mail and look at porn. Might be a competitor to Mac/MS's portable device OSes, thats it.
It's closest competitor? ASUS's barebones Linux distro that comes on the EEE's, DSL, Puppy Linux, etc. Not even Linux as a whole, just the simple stuff people use for daily web tasks.
Remember there are 2 types of Mac users:
Those that run things like Final Cut, have a clue what they are doing and prefer the Mac OS for legitimate reasons (unfortunately I don't think there are as many of these as Advres claims, "high end" markets for pretty much everything are small)
Those that want something "cool and different". Sometimes these people think their machines are more secure/stable, but have no idea why or how (majority of Mac users).
Two types of PC users:
Those that know computers, understand their shit, use programs that need Windows and really prefer the Windows OS (also a small group in contrast to total sales)
Those that bought a computer that had Windows, so thats what they use (90% of PC users)
This OS is only going to apply to people in the first category for both PC and Mac and for these people, it's a secondary OS.
The Linux nerds are going to hop all over this for fun, but it won't be a suitable replacement for Ubuntu, Suse, Knoppix, in most applications.
Remember Wally World tried selling an inexpensive, but adequately powered (for what it was) machine that ran Linux. It flopped because people who fell into the "other category" were pissed that they couldn't run (__insert software __) and they returned them in droves. It was clearly stated that this was LINUX computer NOT WINDOWS OR MAC, but people just didn't get it. This OS will not appeal to those retards either.
It will be used by those on the high end of things for something quick, lite and (hopefully) stable.

Really, it sure doesn't seem like it at all in your op.
would something like this kill apple?? i mean the only thing they have going for them, besides the cool factor is the "working OS".
You're speculating on the effect a yet-to-be-released cloud-based netbook OS will have on one of the oldest/established players in the industry that doesn't even have a competing product in that niche based on a shitty NY times article. This isn't even comparing apples to oranges.
Your posts are even more idiotic if you look at Apple's revenue breakdown.
it would be nice to have another option besides linux.

good call lumpy^^^
This will matter to those that understand partitioning drives and dual boot machines.
Thankfully, I am not one of those...
PC's wont be shitty forever...once there is a smooth running PC....then what?
your fallacy is assuming that while operating systems for PCs are improving, apple's OS (which coincidentally also runs on PCs: see here (http://store.psystar.com/featured/open7-osx.html) for an OSX running box that is not Apple's hardware) will stay static. It's the same fallacy that makes every year since 1998 the "year of Linux on the desktop"...

I assume that means you aren't interested? (honestly if you even know the phrases "dual boot" and "drive partitions" your way ahead of many, admit it you are kind of a nerd)
I am "one of those" and I'm interested in it. Guess that proves my point...

Chrome OS is targeting the mobile/net/entertainment users.
Windows targets all users into one OS-- with different options. (whatever)
Mac does the same, but it's just one no-bs package.
Chrome OS will just focus on the people that check email, listen/download music, take/upload photos... and that's it.
Sounds like a perfect netbook OS for two things: kids and vacation. It'll boot up in no time, conduct basic online tasks, and not be bloated with crap that makes it crash.
Google has also been hiring MS people breeching contracts and ensuing law suits, too btw. Apple, on the other hand, has heeps of cash stored away right now. The whole industry is wondering what they have planned. Never mind the mac touch in development that we already know about that could also use a simpler OS than Snow Leopard if it pursues the netbook crowd. Remember, Apple keeps everything a secret while Google keeps everything open. It's entirely feasible that you'll be blind-sided and Google Chrome OS will be about as successful as Google Chrome the browser.

Chrome Os is starting out as a netbook system, much like Xandros version of Linux, BUT it really is a transformational platform to reach into the realm of Cloud computing and as such it is a long term threat to MS's models of selling programs to be downloaded to individual pc's.
It could be big and its about time someone took a new look at how computers are used.
if you like seeing the word "fuck" in a supposedly serious journalistic article check this piece out:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/09/dzuiba_google_chrome_redux/
it asks the same question as the OP, but this time about microsoft, and reaches the same conclusion as we did.

the mac, pc debate is stupid. If you are knowledgeable about computers, and are buying one for a specific task/program, whether it be mac or pc, then great. But the vast majority of computer users, check email, browse the web, use ms word, excel, ppt, watch movies, listen to music. then it makes no fucking difference which comp they buy...
back to chrome: if any of you haven't tried google docs, its integration with the web makes it a much more useful program than ms word in my opinion. Being able to access your docs from an internet cafe in new mexico, and being able to collaboratively work on a doc with someone is killer. Google chrome will be able to do all of the basic tasks (music, movies, docs, internet), for free. It should be great for the home, kids, college students. Google is not going to try to steal the niche industry markets like: cad, gaming, arts editing. The only problem will be how useless it is when you dont have internet access
