About a month ago I picked up a Canon 40D and am wanting to learn more than what the manual has to offer (although I still have some reading to do there). In my searches I ran across this >Mastering Digital SLR Photography (http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Digital-Photography-David-Busch/dp/1592006051/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top). But the reviews make it sound like it covers much about the mechanical parts of the camera, which I don't care too much about at this point. I'd like to know more about techniques, composition, basics, styles etc.

Anyone have any recommendations? Another search turned up some people just subscribing to a digital photo magazine type?

Not everyone will agree but Scott Kelby's The Digital Photography Book vol 1 and 2 are pretty good books. He goes through everything in plain english instead of going all tech mayhem. Which is why some people don't like his books, so it depends how you want to learn.

Look around for a specific guide on your camera, read reviews for it and generally they're helpful. They address how to use your camera for certain types of shots as well as composition and stuff like that
