Hi Folks,

In the next month or so, I'll be shopping for a bike for the lady. She's just beginning rocking the sprockets :fm: and is on a pretty limited budget of $750 - $1000. She's 5'8"ish, maybe 5'9", slender and will probably crush me on the climbs but will be hesitant on the DH. I don't want to get her a beginner bike or the like, rather something she can progress on. I'm thinking a F/S XC bike might be ideal because I don't think a 6" trail bike will be necessary due to her weight (or lack there of). The riding around here is primarily buttery single track but it'd be nice to have a bike that will work when we travel elsewhere.

So...I need suggestions or even leads, though she probably won't realistically be ready to purchase anything until mid May. From the hip, I'm thinking used SC Superlight/Juliana, Yeti ASR, etc.

Thanks in advance!

If you think she will be hesitant on the DH, you should get her a 5 inch bike, not a squirly XC bike. Best way to make a gf hate DHing is to put her on a super steep XC bike and let her go OTB on the DH.

Look, Kona Dawg style, fun, slacker, and not super expensive especially if you pick up a used one or a demo.
