72-HOUR FORECAST

On Wednesday the first significant NW(290+300+) ground swell we've seen for quite a while will be filling in. The NW'er was generated by a good looking low which moved into the Alaskan Gulf over this last weekend. This is a fairly steep angled swell so look for the best surf in Southern San Diego, along with a few other select spots through Ventura and the South Bay. For the breaks that can pick up some of the swell look for waist-chest high+ surf Wednesday and Thursday, while standout spots through San Diego see shoulder to head high plus sets. Those waves back down by Friday.

Steep tropical SE swell (160-165) from Hurricane Frank will also be in the water on Wednesday. Hurricane Frank took a serious shot of shearing winds on Tuesday and that has weaken the system sooner than orignially expected. Frank is about 360 miles WSW of the Baja Tip now and he's due to steadily lose steam as he switches to a more WNW heading and tracks over cooler water during the middle of the week. For the exposed spots (mainly in North Orange County and to a lesser degree in some parts of Ventura) look for surf to build into the chest to shoulder high plus range by Wednesday afternoon and hold into Thursday. Standout breaks of north OC see sets hitting head high plus then. Since Frank is still an active hurricane those numbers could change but at this point it looks like that's the most Frank will be able to send us. Stay tuned for more updates.

Tuffy, you get out this morning? Was any of this showing yet? This is going to be interesting because of the steep angles for both these swells. might try and catch a bit of the NW tomorrow, but think I'm going to ride the new bike tonight.

it was pretty fun this morning and then simultaneously, the wind and crowds picked up.

Tuffy,

You typically go to Topanga early or surf in V-land? This swell seems to be one of the bigger non-swells in a very non-swell filled summer...

So I got hosed last night, I think by the tide. Like an idiot I didn't check out the tides. Was hoping to get some surf after work and there was nada, zip, zero.

Ended up with a 45 minute ride, half in the dark.
