View Full Version : Soreness... (calling fitness gurus)

Max Gosey

...is a bitch.

This is probably a question for the noobs at Gapicski, but I don't like them. I saw a fitness related question here a week or so ago, so I hope it's not completely ruled out as feasible.

Anyway, anyone have any remedies? I started a seriously hardcore leg workout the other day, and 3 days later I am still sore. I am about to go again today to do my legs and back, and I have a whole freaking workout planned for the entire winter. Long distance aerobic traning, lots of weights, some sprints, and balance work. I do legs twice a week, but they hurt like hell for a long time. I have been stretching a lot, working on flexibility, but since I am so sore it makes me wonder if I am stretching enough (15 minutes, every muscle in my body once a day and twice on leg day).

I take protein (isopure, pretty much straight up protein) to try to rebuild what I lose. I drink lots of water and have done everything I can think to do. I know i'll be sore having just started this regimen, but is there any way to minimize it (i.e. sport legs? Does that shit really work?)

Any remedies for soreness besides "don't workout, jong! ski!!!" would be dandy.

And if I'm gonna get hosed for this, let me know, and it will be gone in a flash. ;)

Max, c'mon, man. You need a hobby, bad. If you weren't sore, something would be wrong. A remedy for being sore? Don't excersise.

Not talking about eliminating it, Rev. Just ways to mollify.

AKA does sport legs really work like silly mohawk man says it does? I'd be curious to find out.

Got it. Drink lots of water after excercise. And believe it or not, I've got a mtb partner that swears by that sportsleg stuff. I use Cytomax on longer rides. It's an endurance mix that seems to help a bit...enough that I notice it, at least.

Stretch a SHIT LOAD. Something I'm working on. And make sure you're balancing your muscles...i.e. work your abs AND your back.

Finally, if I'm really sore to the point of legitimate pain, I'll pop a few advil.

Max Gosey
08-08-2004, 12:36 PM
El padre, aka el médico (my dad), swears by advil, too... I had forgotten that.

Thanks Rev. I think I might get a sample pack of that silly Sport Legs crap come next payday (manana!!!! TGR sale here I come!!!)

Gracias, señor.

Eat bananas. Potassium is good for relieving muscle pain, more specifically cramps, because it counter-acts the lactic acid that builds up in your legs.

That and lots of water will help.

I'll add my endorsements for the stretching and the bananas. Also, since you said you just started the workout, that might be a reason why you're still sore. Oh, and work on your core - abs & back - just as much as your legs. that's a HUGE advantage in helping to keep you stable and in control on your skis.

Red Baron
08-08-2004, 02:17 PM
...and I'll add my endorsment to the "sport legs" stuff, I don't care if it really works, but my brain thinks it does, and that's good enough for me! Get some!

He's the key: don't be such a pussy. :D

If you just started working out, you're gonna be sore for a few days. It's just the way it works. When I don't do legs for a while, I'm sore for a good 3-5 days. And that's with stretching, lots of water, bananas, etc.

I don't know if this works after anaerobic workouts like weightlifting, but for aerobic things like running, get an empty garbage can or fill you tub up with icy cold water (read as much ice as you can round up in LA) and put your legs in it for 10 minutes or so, until they go numb then awhile more. This will be hard to stand at first, but you will feel so much better the next morning. It will also get you ready for the cold of winter coming from LA. Some people also claim by those leg massage stick things.

Actually I forgot about this. It works like a charm for weightlifting too. The absolute best thing you can do after a workout is take a long, cold shower. I'm not talking about lukewarm, I mean COLD. It's the equivalent of icing your body down. Go ahead and get cleaned up quickly in warm water first, but then turn off the hot dial and hit up your muscles for good long while. It will cut your recovery time in half if not more. I'm not exaggerating.

The whirlpools that professional athletes use are generally filled with ice. It's the best way to quickly recover.

Ahnold would alternate 2 minutes of COLD water with 2 minutes of HOT water in his showers to help recovery.

Of course, he also showered with a bunch of other guys...

It's called DOMS- delayed onset muscle soreness. It generally peaks 48 hours after a workout.

Many of the remedies listed above are good; water, stretching, ice bath, contrast showers.

Also look into easy aerobic exercise in the days after. It only gets worse if you avoid the soreness, suck it up and slowly warm up and get the blood flow going. This helps the body flush out the things that are making you sore. Plus, after getting the body warm you are more limber and able to focus on doing some good post activity stretching.

Your leg muscles (particularly the quads) are the biggest ones; so they take the longest to recover. It's ok to work out if they're a little sore; but if they're moderately sore or worse, they need more time to recover. Your workout will be unfruitful from a strengthening standpoint if you don't give the muscles enough time to recover.

I thought the daughter comment wouldn't sit well with Karl.

Advice is a great thing especially when it's asked for and heeded when it can help.

First you don't just leap into a big workout full bore. You really need to adapt your body to the stress and do some light workouts of the same exercises first. You really can do more harm than good in many ways the way you've gone at it.

The DOMS that stikki mentions is bang on and to some degree unavoidable. It is likely due largely to the amount of eccentric loading. You can tell this because it probably hurts like shit when you go DOWN stairs. It won't be as bad after subsequent work outs but may take a few for the body to adapt. That's one reason you go easy with early workouts.

To lose the stiffness you have try a spin on a bike to get the heart up (120) for 15 minutes or so and then stretch. Don't go back to the weights until the stiffness is gone. You're just begging to tear something that way.

The bananas and hot/cold plunges may help some but far more effective is a good warm down. After your workout get on an exercise bike/treadmill/rower, whatever and do 5 to 10 minutes of light work. HR in the 120 range. A little up but not straining just enough to get good blood flow and flush all the shit left in the muscles (lactic acid). You still will have hurt after that first workout but this can really help with future ones.

DJSapp
08-09-2004, 09:12 AM
What I've found that works for me (I know I'll hear dissent) is continue working out every day afterward. Concentrate on more cardio, and very light on the weights (50% or less of what you lifted before). It will hurt, and you will look like a pussy, but after the first week, you will be able to work out everyday without pain or soreness. Keeping the body moving and not allowing the lactic acid to build up is the key.

And seconding or thirding the bannanas, as well as a good mix of fruits and veggies. Vitamins and minerals are as important as protein in training.

Viva

Stikki and L7 are right on (edit- DJ, too). Doing light excercise the next day is great for recovery.

Heh...this thread brings back memories of when I was a wee pup, still learning about weight training. The first time I tried squats, I did something like 5 sets with 135lbs. My legs and ass were sore for a week! The next day it hurt like Hell just to sit on the toilet to take a dump.

Max Gosey
08-09-2004, 12:04 PM
L7, I second the light weight stuff.

I have planned the first two weeks as a "mock" workout, meaning that I do all the same exercises that I will be doing for the rest of the season, except with like 25% of the weight (i.e. squats and straight-leg and lunges with only the bar, leg extensions with like 30 lbs., etc). Just to establish range of motion.

I stretched last night. A LOT. And hot diggety damn did it help. I'm not even half as sore as I was after my first workout. You guys know your shit. Time to pick up my paycheck and get some sport legs!!!

P.S. I have planned to add sprints after the first 2 weeks and a few more plyometric exercises 2 weeks after that. There is a like 10 foot hill in my backyard. Someone had recommended hill sprints. What I'm curious about is whether A) I should alternate these with the slightly less strenuous flat-ground sprints and B) how often and how many should I do? I hate speed training with a passion, but I'll do whatever it takes to kick ass this season. Any advice from the speed geeks would be awesome (especially whether I should do them on leg day or on a different day... that has always been difficult for me to figure).

P.P.S. I have been reading more and posting less. It's probably proportional because I read close to every post on this board.

I want you to understand that our perception of those people here is different from where you guys are because the people in many ways are indeed different. After witnessing certain events among certain groups of people, stereotypes are formed--this is human observation (if A, then B).

I have absolutely nothing against people of color. I advocate equality among my friends who in many ways do not share my open-mindedness.

Before, some of my "inappropriate comments" regarding this matter were made because, due to my environment, I was not aware that they were inappropriate. No one around here really looks down upon the two "ethnic slur" related comments I have made in my history of posting here and at P-Mag.

However since you guys have made it clear that these things are indeed inappropriate, I WILL KEEP MY COMMENTS, OPINIONS, PERCEPTIONS, ETC. TO MYSELF. Hopefully that is sufficient for all of you. Agreed?

Now that I have made my point, I would also like for this subject at hand to be dropped, if possible.

If I hadn't been chewed out already, I would go ahead and call you a hypocrite for (assumably) discriminating against the South as a bunch of mindless rednecks who make love to farm animals. If that's not what you are doing, you just proved my point by stating something that was misinterpreted as a generalization.

Doesn't matter now. Let's keep the generalizations to ourselves (ah hell, I can't tell you guys what to do).

I understand that children mean that much to their parents; what I was unclear about is that a comment similar to the one I made would set someone off like it did. Because I make derogatory statements once about a child to her father does not mean that I will not be a good parent in 10 or 15 years. I have a lot to learn, I hope you guys know that I realize this.

And I think Karl is exactly on target with what he has said about me. I like to think I am more mature than when I started out here and that I have learned the decorum--at least to a reasonable extent. I am slowly learning not to take shit personally anymore, even if it is directed that way. I shall instead heed it as advice.

Ice: my first comment was at powdermag and referred to work ethics. My second was here in the vanity license plate thread. My third was in this thread, and that post has been edited/deleted.

Ok?

Max, that was not a generalization. it was mearly an attempt to poke fun AT YOU, not anyone else from Louisana, or the south for that matter. I would like to point out that Max is not the only person among us that has made racially insensitive comments. Is there a reason that comments made in reference to blacks are somehow more wrong than comments directed at other ethnic groups? How many times have I read that Asians are the worst drivers, and a quick perusal of the threads on page one reveals
my sleeping bag smelled like a camel driver's armpit,
I think the problem here is Punani thinks "Manual Labor" is a person. From his postings on this board I really don't think that Max is an ignorant biggot any more than the rest of us are. However, for some reason (maybe it's because he is perceived as an obnoxious gaper from Louisiana) he always gets called out on it.

I hate to hijack this but...

You're kidding right? I really don't see anything wrong with this. I could perhaps read into it making fun of hispanic manual laborers (Manuel Labor), but that would be a real stretch. I mean a really, big stretch. And as such you can't make the assumption it was intended to be racist. Or perhaps you think its insulting to people who do manual labor. I don't see it that way either, and I grew up working for a construction company. Otherwise it's funny as hell, because Punani won't "do" Manual Labor. Get it?
