View Full Version : G3 Alpinist durability?

I'm going to be picking up some skins for my new b/c setup and I'm considering the G3 Alpinist. My current skins are the older G3 Expedition skis, and while the skins are still really grippy and holding up fairly well, the tip loop system is slowly ripping the skin in the fold-over area... I'd like to avoid this in the future. The question I have is the durability of the tip attachment system on the Alpinisht and how possible/easy it is to do field repairs if you did have a problem.
I've done some reading about these skins and have heard a few people mention tip-attachment breakage issues... I'm wondering what the long-term concensus is from those who've been using them.

that happened to a buddy ,he just sewed the ripped parts togetehr and kept on using the skins
Take them to an upholstery shop and have them sewn

I'm glad to hear that there is a repair solution. That in combination with my local shop (MEC) said I can return them if they break in the field, and I'm sold. I picked up a pair tonight.
It's been mentioned elsewhere, but the skins measure shorter than they suggest on the box. I.e. the skin that should have covered my 181 Coomba's came up well short and I bought the size up from that.

I guess I missed that thread. I just bought some Apinists, but haven't cut them yet. The tail end of the plush is about 5 inches short of the tail of my skis, but I can still attach the cam to the end. So, my newbie AT question is: Will I have any significant problem with the last 5" of the tails uncovered? I can still return them to the shop.

You should be fine with the 5" of bare tail.

I generally prefer more than 5" of bare tail. Makes for easier access. :FIREdevil
