i've always wanted to get there, but i lost all my skills.

we used to go to bule hills maine and surf the reversing falls there back when i was in eighth grade. but the wave wasn't as huge. however there was a dynamic ender hole, or 'corn hole' as we dubed it.
clasic to see a bunch of grommets in their dancer xs's lined up in the eddy, gettin stoked to point it into cornhole with no fear. the thing would get your nose a good foot out of the water.

we also used to frequent the sheepscott river, in maine as well.

when i was in college i learned about the skook, but i never got the chance to make the trip, and i was gearllessly poor college student.

is this the premire reversing falls? and if you've been there lets hear about how many ends you threw!

I've never surfed a "tidal bore". I think most on the EC are created at river mouths where the incoming tide and the river flow converge. Skooks is a differenct beast because it is created as the tidal water is forced between two islands. I beat down there is fairly dangerous as the eddy boils can literally swallow you and your boat if you go "on tour". From what I hear, swimming is not a real good option.

yup, the sheepscot and blue hills are ion tidal rivers. when fully raging a swim at blue hills can be very bad. barnacles, exploading eddy lines that suck you under for 90 seconds at a time, not to mention you could easily end up half a mile out to sea.

the footage i've seen from the skook is soo bad ass though. that thig gets insanely huge. i can even imagine what its like to be in such a large pile.

i can't wait untill i move closer to some decent water. i really need to get back into this sport. most tech boat i've ever paddled was a pirouette. all these new shapes look like so much fun. throwing arial 180's by initiating with a single stroke and bunny hop on the wave face. that shit rools.

its also the only other thing i've loved to do besides skiing that gives that severe pucker. capsizing before a big move on a serious rapid is not unlike tomahawking over that cliffband you meant to style.
i suppose surfing would pucker me in the same way too. again, its time to move.

Ha... that's called a air blunt but if you don't get it vertical, that's a roundhouse, if you do it backwards, that's a backstab. Playboating is getting worse than skiing with the fakie chicken no salad mustard grab. I can't keep up. I'm generally the guy paddling into the eddy saying "hey, what I just do".

Surfing a good wave = unlimited powder turns.

From a Canadian perspective the reversing fall in Saint John N.B. are the biggest. Might be bigest in world. Bay of funday has some of the biggest tides in the world so it only seems reasonable. I worked a the pulp mill right beside them, biggest part, but not the part they show in the post cards. Something like 10 ft standing waves. Full bore it would be a bit much for even a river raft.

I used to race and skook was always on the hit list but I always missed it when people made the trek oup there. I guess it is a pretty long haul to get there but the stories and pics that came back were stellar. From the sounds of it there is a limited window of opportunity and that after that window closes you have a great cahnce of fucking yourself up royally. This is from some guys who used to run first decsents and crazy shit like pelican on the slave, bow falls oin banff and other wild and crazy shit. When the going is good though it is mint.
That pic makes me want to get back into it once i get a job and some money and a 36 hour day.

Hmm I don't know how smart that was having the rope right near the dude when he as surfing. Getting tangled in that would be no muy bueno. Those guys in the speed boat were pretty ballsy too, some big waves out there.

I can't stop watching this video. When they do a close up on him with just the wave behind him you would never even be able to tell it's on a river. That's just incredible surfing a wave for that long!!

Skookumchuck is so heavy. that day was 14.8 knots. it was the first time i did tow in stuff there. and yes in hind sight it was a bad idea to try and grab the rope out of the water. that is what i was trying to do.
i know of reversing falls but have never been. i would imagine that most likely it is beyond sick just like Skookumchuck. I know that there are tons of other tidal features like these and as playboating and river surfing grow in popularity we will learn more about them.
i just went to africa to ride "rapid #11" on the Zambezi river. to see a pic go to www.playboatingnorthwest.com
i am going back to do another tow-in session at Skookumchuck this summer when the current will be running at 17 knots. so i hope to have some more good footage.
