Because I CAN-DIGGLE!!

My much beloved AS-X finally gave in, after 5 great years. I’ll miss her but I’m pretty psyched to upgrade to this….

Notice the sweet orange link, in loving memory of my AS-X

Pretty burly welds, extra gusseting for us bigger guys

Stiff rear end, Maxle axle, big bearings
http://p1.pinkbike.com/photo/2636/pbpic2636327.jpg
Came in @ 37lbs with a solid build (Med frame):
DHx5 w/500 lb spring
Totem Solo Air, 1.5”
Chris King 1.5” headset
Easton 28” bars
Gravity Dropper (not in photo)
XT front / 09 Saint rear derailuers
Avis Elxir Carbon brakes with 203 /200 mm rotors (LOVE them)
Gravity light cranks (34/22)
e13 DRS
Shimano DX pedals
Hadley hubs
DT Swiss 5.1 front rim
WTB Freeride rear rim (over 300g less than the 729 I replaced, very durable so far)
Telonic 2.4” front
Maxxis High Roller 2.5” rear
Steel bell
ODI lockon’s
I hope to get an air shock (Rocco World Cup) this winter and I already have a lighter set of wheels that will get a set of 2.35" tires for pure cross-country use, at least my definition of pure XC. Should be around 34lbs when in my light configuration.
Love the ride. Very stable and balanced. I set it up in the 7" travel mode, never bottomed it this past weekend (we raced a very brutal SuperD in Moab that included a serious decent, no issues for my new bike; blew by a few pretty fast guys on the decent). Climbed very well, even quick. A great rider friend of ours followed me on numerous climbs and was shocked on how stable the bike looked while climbing; very, very little bob and the rear tire stayed glued to the trail. A well balance bike is so easy to adjust to, this bike was perfect for me right from the first pedal stroke.
There is nothing like having a new bike. No noise, just smooth parts working in unison to bring a huge smile to my face while riding.

Looks like Canfield is starting to become the new Yeti as far as the Kool-Aid. I now know two people that ride Canfields in Boise...a Balance and a One
How come you went for the Can Diggle instead of the One?
If you think there's very little bob now with the DHX Coil, wait til you get the Roco WC air...those things are great
btw...what's with the lawn chair-O-tires?

How come you went for the Can Diggle instead of the One?
I took Chris's recommendation. They are both the same bike, the Can Diggle is just burlier. We ride pretty rough terrain fairly aggressively and I'm more worried about durability than a few ounces (or pounds I guess). I wanted a 1.5" head tube as well so I didn't have to buy a new headset or fork (both were/are 1.5"). Lastly, if I want to save any weight, I'll drop 20 lbs off my ass for a lot less money than trying to make a bike too light for my riding style (or lack of style is more like it).
I’m a bit bummed for Yeti, they took too long on bring something cool to the market. The Seven may be OK but I don’t think they are going to sell. I know carbon fiber is tough stuff but I don’t need it on my bike, the West is way too rocky to worry about carbon damage. The 575 was and still is a great bike but they are getting dated. Yeti could have beefed up the 575 and found a few more customers but they went too far with the Seven. The new SS stuff may work but again, it needs to be in shops, not just for the team under Pro riders.

how did you do overall on the super D?
Really well. I won the Expert class (no age groups, I was worried when I saw a few local bike shop young guns in my class). Connie got 3rd in the Open Woman's class. Kyle won the Open class, killed it. I should do a separate TR for the SuperD, great event that needs more support next year. The prizes were better than any race we have ever been to (including any National or National Championship we have ever been to). Kyle won a Marin 6" travel frame, the Woman's winner a 888Rc3 fork, Connie made $75, I won an 09 Saint rear derailleur. Many, many other big prizes, very impressive. Great organization and everyone had a great time. Free beer all over town, great parties, more people need to come to Moab for the Ho-Down (late Oct every year, used to the Fat Tire Festival). Our Buddy Von won the dirt jump contest on Sunday, won a RS Argyle fork.

We have been in Moab the last 5 weeks in a row, I HAVE to get some things done at home this weekend but we will ride. Maybe a cool shuttle in the local area??? Little trail work in Draper and then shuttle up so all the Sweater-vesters can get upset? (Sweater-vester = Lycra wearer, roadie on an MTB, more-than-18"-of-exposed-seatpost-on-the-deceent-rider)
The AS-X died, cracked weld. I'm still bummed because that bike took me up and down a LOT of trail all over the West; from Canada to AZ, Colorado to California, Boise to every corner of MT. I don't care what most people say, that bike ripped and took a LOT of abuse. She will be mounted in the garage in a place of honor. I do have a nice Pushed DHx5 that I need to sell now, 2.5" stroke, 8.75" ete, 550lb spring.

Isn't that what everyone does with old tires? For some reason, I can't throw away used tires. I moved from Italy to Utah with tires that will never be ridden again. There is even more in the garage. I don't know why (and I'm not a pack rat...).

Isn't it funny how that works. My second to last ride on my VP, I put a big dent in the downtube. I mean, all the times I've crashed on that thing and some of them have been huge too. And I lay her over on a little crash and blammo. :(
If only that DHX were a 2.5 x 8.5...
Anyway, that's a sweet, sweet new rig, Mr. AG. I can't wait to get back out there soon so our new toys can meet up. Oh and I took your advice and have a nice burly 08 Saint on the new cruiser. So hopefully I don't break anything else next time. ;)

Um - my 3rd place was also last place. I flatted (put a big enough dent in the rim the tubeless quit holding) in the last big rocky section before the climb out (which was super fun as I kept losing more air with every pedal stroke until I was riding on the rim). Meh. It was still fun though (in a sick, I'm going to puke my lungs out sort of way), and the ride on Sunday was awesome. I finally rode the goalposts and am cleaning the 2nd half of the singeltrack under the cliff - yay!
We didn't go to Jailhouse this weekend. But we did cook a pound of bacon and then cook up hash browns in the bacon grease. We're all about a healthy breakfast... ;)

Interested to see your review after you get more time on it.
ps is there no shop that recycles tires around there? MEC locally does it but I have no clue where they end up sending them, I could find out and maybe pass it along for any local shops that might want to re-cycle tires. No need for them to just end up in a landfill.

That's because they bank on rich tourists to give up their perfectly good barely-used tires and once-punctured tubes. :D

So, have you heard anything else about your Totem oil spewage? I will need to replace the old 66 next year and I'm not sold on anything currently out there in a 180 travel fork. After seeing that other one doing the same thing on Hazard I'm leery. Is it just the air forks or Coils too? I was thinking the air forks could easily be worse just because the pressure is pushing that oil out. Especially for a svelte guy like yourself.
BTW - I put a coil rear shock on the ReignX for a test tonight.

Yeah, I had a blown rebound and compression dampener. Rock Shok is replacing both (already swapped out the rebound and used Teflon tape on the compression side, no oil leaks this past week at all and we rode pretty freakin' hard). The coils were even worse than the Solo Airs but I hear the 09's have everything worked out. There is word of a 170mm Lyric with Boxxer World Cup internals running around (actually, rode one last weekend for a minute, AWSOME fork).

Cool, glad to hear you're getting it worked out. Lyric sounds nice, but I want to raise the BB some. I think I've found the limits of the low BB trend. The X is at 13.8" and I've found weaving through the slow speed rock gardens to be a bit annoying lately, at least with almost 7" of travel. It's nice everywhere else.

Unfortunately not a MOD but a “Blackbox-type” new fork. The lowers and stanchions were definitely longer than a current model Lyric, I’m not sure if a mod would work. Maybe it could though, I’ll do a little digging.
Sweet ride. Glad to hear you are even faster now. ;-) (ugh).

"Blackbox' is all beta testing stuff for the A-list spancered riders, but if the stuff is good, it should eventually make it to the market. But don't take my word for it, check out this sweet website:

The fork that Steve Peat, Sam Hill, and a few other Rock Shox downhill racers that said Blackbox on the lowers is now the new, and totally redesigned 2009 Boxxer.
BTW, a 170 mm Lyrik would be sweet. I want one (two step air please).

LOVE it. I still only got a few rides in before winter set in; Utah is crazy that way. We literally went from riding incredible trails way up high in Moab in November to skiing powder the next weekend.
It's funny you ask today as I was just talking to Chris Canfield this morning (I'm getting a Ti-spring for my DHX which is getting pushed right now). He gave me a few more tips to try (I've been running it in the 7" mode and he thinks it climbs as well in the 8" mode, I was going to keep an air shock handy but went with the ti spring instead).
In my few rides since the last post, I've found the bike very well balanced, feels very light, and a very efficient climber. I know, an 8" travel bike is not supposed to be any of these but this bike is incredible. Traction is great while both seated and standing climbing, something I had to work very hard to do on my AS-X. Very little feedback while pedaling, something I noticed while pedaling through fairly rough sections that I could not pedal through before. Descending felt like I was on my DH bike except way livelier due to the lower weight. One particular nasty section in LCC used to give me fits unless I rode my DH bike; on my first time through on this bike and it slide through like it was on rails. No brake jack, something I used to have to worry about quite a bit. It's very confidence inspiring knowing that I can stay on the brakes yet still use the suspension to keep traction. I actually can't remember the rear end locking up on me at all, again very confidence inspiring. I'm really happy with the geometry, I felt very comfortable right away. On Megladon, I entered very steep areas that I had issues with on my other bike and felt perfect on this one.
I would think for your area and riding style, you would love this bike. Mine is going to weigh in @ 36 lbs with the DHx 5w/ti-spring /Totem /Gravity dropper/ 2.4 Telonic's front and rear; you could build even lighter and still have durable parts (I tend to build on the heavy side). I was going to put a Hammer Schmitt on but after finally riding a "light" feeling bike, I don't want the extra weight right now. I don't really have any real issues with front shifting anyway...
Let me know if you want to talk to Chris directly, he is a great resource and can really help you more with the technical end of his bikes. Ordering directly from him can save you some money as well. I can give you his phone # and email if you want.

One of my reservations with the geo is long chainstays.
The measurements online show it at full compression but I think they are still a touch long for my liking. I like to be able to loft the front end with a snappy feel. It makes riding a lot of stuff around here fun, kinda like brapping the front wheel of your moto thru the roots. Now a short stem can help with this, but I've come to really like short chainstays.
Good to hear your update, I might drop Chris an email with a few questions.
