View Full Version : Toenail removal

So every season i damage my big toe toenails and they turn white and eventually fall off. I went to a podiatrist before heading to argentina for the southern season this year and he recommended I just get them removed and cauterized. ("Theres not a day that goes by that I dont remove someones toenail").
Anyone had this done? The problem originates from me getting backseat and pressing them against my boot. They are so f*cked from losing them the 6 times before that when i do this even once or twice it is enough to kill them.
They are coming off in a couple of months so i have to figure out if this is a good idea. Would it hurt to press a cauterized, nail-less nail bed against the boot?
This whole thing makes me cringe just thinking about it.

Which will be harder -- learning how to stay centered when you ski or having your toes cauterized to allow you to continue skiing in the back seat?

I had a toenail permanently removed and have no regrets. It did seem to take a long time to heal (6+ weeks) to where there was no pain in shoes so plan for lots of time to heal before skiing. I did have a infected ingrown toenail that was removed, so maybe the recovery time would be less.

get the right boots , fitted, and learn how to stay forward. you have toenails for a reason. also, women wont like your weird feet

I lose mine every year as well due to wedging my foot into tiny boots. Just learn to deal with it, especially if as hayduke says it may leave you with pain while skiing.

happens to me every year too. i think once it happens, the toe is damaged and it can keep happening easier. i wouldnt consider removing.
ask the neighborhood cat how it enjoyed getting its claws removed.

you have toenails for a reason. Which is................? Seriously, what the hell are they good for?
I had minor surgery a few years ago to remove part of the toenail root on each side of the big toe nail on one foot because I lost the toe nail once and it resulted in chronic in-growing issues. Now that toenail is about 1/3 as wide as the opposite one - no more ingrown nails or problems from jamming it. It did take a while to heal, so plan for that, but it's significantly more boot and shoe friendly than the other, untouched toenail.

I have had no problems with the removed toenail and can't think of any reason that I need one. I wouldn't think twice about having them all removed if I had any reason to. It does look a little weird, but not that much.

Thanks, seems like no one who has actually had it done had any problems.
I do everything i can to stay forward; it just happens really, really easily now.

ummmm
reason for toenails = to paint them purty colors in the summertime during sandal season.

i had my right big toenail removed 7 yrs ago
the doctor said that climbing shoes did the most damage to me..
but he added that tight soccer cleats and ski/snowboard boots did not help.
no regrets..
looks fine, feels better than the swollen pain before.

I had ingrowing problems, but I decided to have all ten removed really just to not have to ever bother trimming them again. They look fairly normal from a distance.

I'd advise any male to get rid of the damned Martian objects as they are completely useless and can cause so much annoyance.

I get it every season too, and for me its a reflex response to lift my toes (even when I'm staying forward). 6 weeks of pain seems excessive if you are not having issues with ingrown toenails (mine are not).

my stepdad had the same problem and I totally thought he was the ONLY one with this problem. But I see that it's not as odd as I thought. Well I do know he was glad to get it done in plenty of time before the winter season and he went through a long period where it sucked a lot, but it seems worth it. When we went skiing last winter it was the first time, since i can remember, we skiied together continuously for several hours without having to stop for him to warm up his boots or ease his foot pain.

I had the same thing done when i was 14, ski racing in tight boots, infected ingrown nails, eventually got the sides burnt and never had an ingrown nail again.
Would not get the entire nail removed.
Just ski forward and your toe nails wont fall off. But I do get horrible toe bang from jumps and I got my big toenails removed it was worth it.

Apparently ultra marathoners are in on this. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/22/fashion/22FITNESS.html “You know any sport has gone off the rails when you have to remove body parts to do it.”
Im not having as many problems, I try not to lift the toes and to keep forward. The podiatrist who was all enthusiastic about taking them off was Jon-Paul Seslar DPM in Berkeley. He gave me a shot in one that grew in poorly and went to town cutting 70% of it out. It grew back perfectly and that helped a lot. Keep hope alive I guess. Cost me $20 after insurance.
And nail-less commentator, I showed my girlfriend your picture and she insisted on getting me a pedicure for my birthday. It actually helped with some weird calluses I took for granted.

simple as this:
$300 to the podiatrist. It's really painful for a week or so, then kinda painful for like 5 more weeks while it closes up.
Then done. Glory Hallelujah you can ram that big toe into tight boots and hike downhill all day long and kick soccer balls and whatever the fuck else used to bruise your toenails. It's one of the best things I've ever done for overall enjoyment of skiing, being as how that toe pain used to just kind of always be there souring my ski days.
Very, very much worth doing. Plan your timing right, I did my last one co-incidentally with another surgery in the off season.
EDIT...AND GOD DAMMIT YOU FUCKING JONGS. USE THE FUCKING SEARCH FUNCTION. I'VE BEEN POSTING ON THIS FOR YEARS.
WE DON'T NEED 59 DIFFERENT THREADS ON "JUST MOVED TO SALT LAKE, WHAT'S UP?" and Black toenails, what now?
fuck!

Why not go the extra mile and just have the toe removed? I did (http://kneetopia.blogspot.com/2009/09/gone-baby-gone-middle-toe-partial.html) :-)

This is a thread from 2008 and your answer has been given several times, but thank you for contributing. At this point we are just shooting the shit on on old topic; Nail-less commentator brought it back from the dead with his awesome pic.
A search for find, title, toenail removal brings you here.

That is fucking rad.....if I had an excuse (like ingrown) I would do it.
Until I get the balls, here is my solution.
--Trip the big nail way back (obvious)
--File a serious 45 off the top edge of the big toenail.
Do that and there is nothing for the big toenail to catch on......now let's start a shaving lower leg hair for ski boots thread (anyone else?? I swear it is the best thing going).
