View Full Version : Official Jackson Hole Summit 2005 Dates
Bum Z

Since this got buried in the first thread, I thought I'd start another. These dates seem to work the best for most people. If we need further debate, let's do it here.
Friday, February 4th through Monday, February 14th.
Some reasons why these dates are good:
1. No holiday conflicts
2. No SIA trade show conflicts
3. No Euro Summit conflicts
4. TGR Crew likes these dates -
Having spent time with TGR this weekend early February is definately thier best time for the summit. It was even slightly hinted that some of the "pros" (in addition to the TGR staff pros) might be in Jackson at that time.
TGR Office is Stoked
We are fully stoked for all you maggots to come taste the wealth of a bad ass February storm dumping the likes of 2ft on our playland we call home. Ahhh Yeeeaaaa were waiting.

Yep woodsy, currently figuring out what will work out best for january. Current possibilities are:
1)live in car and chase storms from dec 28-feb3
2)base operations in whitefish mt, ski mostly at Big Mtn with frequent trips north of border(Ive got free couch for month)
3)Sublet a place in UT for a month and ski there
If Solitude is looking for employment for the month of january let me know...

I'm down. Echo comments on waiting for confirmation from frozen. I know this is all max-goosey-ish, but I'd prefer to book my flight ASAP only because place tix are usually cheaper the farther out you book 'em. For the most part. Anyway, it's always exciting to think about the next big trip, that's for sure.

Divegirl - why not drive it? Here's some Sacto to Jackson Hole 1-way info from Mapquest.com (http://www.mapquest.com) :
Total Est. Time: 13 hours, 59 minutes Total Est. Distance: 843.25 miles
That would be about $100 in gas RT if you split it two ways. Travelocity gave a quote of $343 RT w/ a stop at SLC. Orbitz said $627 w/ stops in SLC and Denver. Something to think about...

Definitely. However, I'm always really excited to fly, and from what I've heard, sometimes your car won't start in JH due to the cold weather. So, I figure I'll thumb it from the JH airport. I plan on being there at least 5 days.

Yep.. that's right. No cars will start in town, sometimes for weeks on end. None. Town comes to a standstill.
So, if it is that cold, then how are you going to "thumb it" from the airport? "Thumb it" for what? Since all the cars won't start due to the cold weather, you must mean that you'll be thumbing for a poosey of clowns.
They have those special cars, with plenty of room for girls with clown fetishes. And with 10+ clowns in 'em, the cars warm up quick! And then they can start!
So what have we learned here? The only cars in Jackson when it's cold out will be full of clowns? Ack! My head hurts.

Ok, I'm laughing so hard right now. But I'm confused at the same time. Not the "I don't get it" kind of confused state of mind, but more like in the concerned-confused kind of way. Sorta like thinking, "This guy Uber is messed up, but funny as hell at the same time, and I'm laughing at him because he's so full of both shit and comedy!" No, actually I'll probably be mooching a ride off of some maggot passing through or already in JH. That is, if their car will start. Maybe if I bring my poosey of clowns, that will bribe the poor mang into hooking me up. Or, logically speaking and the event that will most likely happen is, I'll take this shuttle (http://www.jacksonholealltrans.com/) to this hostel (http://www.hostelx.com/). But, no, I'm not planning it in my head or anything.

Hey Nater, when Ms DG said she might
bring my poosey of clowns she could of been referring to either of us. I resent being called a clown. We're more of garrishly embellished carnival-related comedic dramatists. And, if left to our own devices, we would certainly have problems getting Divegirl "hooked up."

Yes, I do see your point....
<open letter to DG>
I take offense to being compared to a clown. I'll have you know that my nose is not red, it does not squeak and I only wear makeup on "special" occasions. Furthermore, wigs itch. They have no place on my head. And last and certainly most significant, I am not funny therefore I cannot be referred to as a clown. Other epithets may be applied, but "clown" is not one of the acceptable appelations.
Sincerely NateR (Viking in training).

Assumed info: Approx. 1650 miles RT, a vehicle w/ approx. 20 mpg, 2 passengers who aren't leeches, and approx. $2.30 per gallon.
1650 miles / 20 mpg = 82.5 gallons of gas
82.5 gal. x $2.30 per gallon = $189.75 spent on gas
Round up to $200 for twinkies, big gulps, vibrating sheep panties, etc.
$200 between 2 people = $100 per person.
Admittedly, I'm being optimistic with the gas prices. However, this will be during Feb., which is when gas prices are typically lower. I didn't miss anything, did I?
Oh, yeah... a stop in Reno at the blackjack tables or the Bunny Ranch will cost you an extra $300. Either place you're screwed.
So very, very sorry for the bad pun.....

This is sounding like something I really want to do and I'm beginning to ruminate on it in earnest.
Question about lodging: can anyone recommend any cheap hotels in the area and what would said hotels run? Or is it all fancy-schmancy super-expensive hotels (in which case...do they get mad if you sleep under the tables in the lodges?). Is there any thought of renting a house or condo and squeeezing a bunch of us in?
Just wondering how many convenience stores I'll have to rob...er, I mean how many fewer shopping trips to VS I will have to make this summer.

The drive is weather depending. I've done it in 13 hours (Oakland to Teton Village) with a partner... piece of cake. With a storm across I-80 (Tahoe or the vast wasteland that is Nevada) or in Idaho approaching WY... not so much fun.
I'll be there for a big chunk of January with my fiance... which is why I was hoping for a January Summit. However, with the summit being in Feb... if I can get more time off work... I'll be down for another roady from the Bay Area.

I priced airfare, and the cheapest I could find from Sea-Tac to Jackson was in the 300-dollar range...SEA to SLC, then SLC to Jackson. So, at that rate, it'd be cheaper for me to drive (i'd probably cost me about 150 bucks in gas, round-trip, and I'm looking at an...oh...12-to-13-hour trip). Also, a week is a little long for me to be sleeping in ze car, so I'd be down for a little brotel or hostel action. Or Micah Black could just let me surf his couch, but I'm guessing that one's unlikely :D
So, Seattle folk, I'd be willing to carpool/convoy it with those interested. I have snowtires and chains, so this shouldn't be a problem (having already made it over Teton Pass once in a buddies 1975 chevy full-size 2WD, complete with me drunk to bits and pissing out the open door, because we couldn't stop for me to pee lest we lose our momentum up the hill. It looked dicey!). I'd probably drive to Bozeman, crash for the night at a buddy's, and then make the 3-4hr drive down to Jackson.
Note to self - get credit card. I've made it this far (I'm 24) without one, but it seems now is the time. I'm gonna need a grand for this trip at least, and no way could I save that amount of money up without it being touched somehow.

The drive sounds awefully similar in length and even topography to my old drive of western CO out to LA (when I was living in CO and had to drive out to LA for family BS stuff). I always had to do it alone and in one shot. No problems, except once when I got hit with a snowstorm in Utah. It made it an hour or so longer. I had a partner a couple of times, and it went by like nothing. I'm not afeared.

if Dick Cheney gets re-elected as VP, I could just fly on the Dick Cheney limo-hauling shuttle to Jackson. I'd just have to get to DC first. But then again, the re-election's about as likely as me crashing at Micah Black's.

I did it a couple times to SF after living in JH. It was between 13 and 16 hours and tended to average about 15.
Sprite, condo's are fairly reasonable right at the base. Basically the 3 cheapish choices are a condo at the base and pile it high with maggots, Hotel X, or a condo in the Aspens which is about 6 miles from the village. Cheap, decent, but not nearly as convenient.
I'm definitely thinking about a 4 or 5 day weekend visit out there.
It is very similar to the CO - LA drive, except I would say the Nevado I80 portion of this is worse. Weather is typically worse in the winter and it can be very windy. Very desolet too.

This is what brownmonkey and bad_roo did during the Tahoe Summit. It was killer! Roo's crowd was awefully cool and a fun to be around. They were gonna have a good time no matter what. It also didn't hurt that the place the rented ruled. I've never played so much Galaga as I did there.

That is true. There's definitely more mountain passes to cross on I-80, a bit more opportunity for nasty weather, although the Northern Nevada weather isn't as wet as Utah. It's a pretty nifty drive. Just don't do Hwy 50. Bad things happen on that road.

For those not in the know.....
Is their another place to fly into that's cheaper?
Idaho Fallls is still pricey and Jackson is and arm and a leg.
Any Utards ever take the shuttle service from SLC? The flight to SLC is cheap and the shuttle not too bad.
Seems pretty cheap $102 versus renting a car.
Driving probably not an option given the 18 hrs in the car and giving up two days for travel.
edit: Just found an article (http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/0707SouthwestFares07-ON.html) saying that Southwest is going to cut prices up to 65% after August 16th. With any luck flights might be cheaper a little later in the summer.

Depending on # 's of people and how long you are going for a rental car isn't too bad. The times just never worked for me on the shuttle.
I have driven the SLC-JH route a bunch because the flight was always too pricey for me. I have mentioned it before, but typically route is fly to SLC, Ski alta (with patroller buddy), drive JH that afternoon (about 4-5 hrs), then repeat the whole process again when finished. This is the cheapest, most flexible way to do it.
Flights to JH do get cancelled as well. I did the drive last year and my dad flew, but he got screwed with weather cancelling his flight costing him a day of skiing. the drive was a bit hairy through the canyon that night, but still better than missing the next day of 7inches fresh and being the first 2 down the N Hoback!!! Damn I love that mtn! If the snow is good = best in N.AM.

Thanks Comish, that's definitely something to consider!! Hopefully us Tahoe maggots can book a few rows on a plane flight and plan exact dates together. It would be cheaper to fly to SLC, and get a bunch of people to one car..., etc. We'll figure it out.

Uber...if the conditions are right, I'm thinking about making one MASSIVE road trip around the time of the summit. Something like this:
SF-TAHOE-SLC-JH-BC (Golden, Kicking Horse, Whistler) and back to SF via WA (Baker?), & OR (Hood?). Conditions will dictate where most time is spent. If the conditions aren't right, I won't do it. It'll be fly by night. I'm thinkin' about taking 2 weeks. You and any other mag is welcome to roll along for any part of the journey.
By the way, did you ever get to use the Northstar pass?

Tell me about it.
I'm certainly willing to do the drive if it isn't solo (and If I'm going to JH).
It's looking like I'm going to have play the choose 2 out of 3 game for next winter (Choices are: JH, Whistler, and Silverton). JH is the only one of the three I've been to before.

Sprite, the Hostel X is the absolute perfect skier's location from what I understand. Basic, cheap, and 100 yards from the freaking tram! All for a measely 55 bucks a night!
I'm worried it will book up too fast. Tell me, friends, are these fears justified? I don't want to dick anyone over by getting the last room or something...:( Is it likely?

Pumped for this! Finally a summit that I'll be able to make, a 4 hour drive down from Bozeman. Gonna have to start working on my contacts down there for a couch to surf. If worst comes to worst (and it aint that bad), got an Uncle in Driggs :D.

Yes. All the rooms are taken. You might want to rethink the trip.

All this talk of JH gives me a big woody.
I only have a hazy recall of my only trip ever to JH. It was with about 500 other party animals from my university on a package tour.
After surviving three hours of extremely nervous tension while the bus in front of us got the full bag search at the border (had to slap down the hand of my riduculously naive friend as he was about to ask the customs agent a question regarding the consequences associated with carrying illegal substances!! ), we arrived during a real dry spell with crap snow for days 1 and 2.
NewYears day we got whacked with a huge storm that kept dumping until we left. Main things I remember from that trip are: the hangovers, the beauty of the area and mountain, the skiing that was absolutely unreal after the beeyatch got powed up, and finishing pub crawl night at some country joint in town with real saddles at the bar that kicked ass. Yeehaw!! Oh yeah, the neon glowstick bowties me and my buddy wore to the New Year's party that drew babes to us like a bug zapper draws bugs. (this was allowed then, it was still the 80's)
I'm so feeling this place calling me back and looking forward to hooking up with the maggot crew for the first time. I'm going to make this happen!!:D Likely driving from Vancouver for an eight or nine day excursion. Will aim for any storms that are in my way and try to hit another cool place on the way (Red anyone?)

Uber, I did the drive this past winter. It sucks. It might suck less if you're not doing it solo, but it still sucks.
This past winter I did this drive with a friend and it sucked, it really really sucked. You cross 8 mountain passes and if it is windy and snowy the roads can blow.

Actually I think this one,

Flophouse II - A (http://www.vrbo.com/25648)
or this one,
http://images3.vrbo.com/vrbo/images/27177a.jpg
Flophouse II - B (http://www.vrbo.com/27177)
might work better given their location (#37507 looks to be at least 20 miles from JHMR), but I love the view from the other one.
(Pencil me in for 1 or possibly 2 spots on the TH-SU at the end of the Summit, regardless of where the Flophouse II will be located.)

I like the flophouse idea! I wish I had stayed at the Roo flophouse for the Tahoe Summit.

No. I came into town for job interviews and ended up having one just about every day I was there. I thought I was going to have enough time to head up there, but I ended up just getting interview after interview. I believe the pass was only good on the weekdays, so I gave it to some guy at a shop who said he could use it. Thanks again, though!
Don't know if I could do the road trip thing. That's an aweful lot of time/money, and I'm not sure I'll have either then. I'll have to get back to you when the time gets closer to said dates.

A big trip. I don't know if I have commit to that kind of time, but I'd love to get a big posse of SF/Kookwood folks out in JHole.

We don't know yet, either. You didn't miss a thing. We're all just bullshitting with each other until frozenwater tells us the actual, final dates.
Ok, then! Back to it!

Yeah, I like that LCC is directly between Tahoe and JH, it really makes the road trip attractive if the proper systems roll in. :D

Yeh, It seems like there are way too many JH Summit threads. I'm working on a new official thread that has all the lodging/events/ticket info and links. I should be able to have it up later this week.
BTW official dates are Feb 4-14.
