HOW OBAMA BLEW IT
PAYS PRICE IN POLLS FOR BUNGLED ATTACKS ON SARAH
By KIRSTEN POWERS

YESTERDAY'S Gallup poll had John McCain ahead of Barack Obama by an astonishing 10 points among likely voters. A Washington Post poll had that lead at only two points, but clearly showed a McCain surge - especially among women. This wasn't what Democrats were expecting when they left Denver - yet they have nobody to blame but themselves.

Obama's toughest challenge has always been to connect with working-class swing voters. So attacking the poster child for small-town values, Sarah Palin, was a bad strategy.

No, Obama didn't engage in the mass sneering at Palin - but he did fall into the trap of disrespecting her. When McCain chose her, the Obama campaign's first response was to ridicule the size of her town. Then the candidate himself began referring to her as a "former mayor" when she is in fact a sitting governor.

When she retaliated (justifiably) by mocking his stint as a organizer, the Obama camp was clearly rattled. Obama himself actually began arguing about the importance of community organizing. His supporters amplified this cry - claiming Palin's attack was a racist slur and passing around e-mails titled "Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a governor."

Meanwhile, the rest of the country was probably wondering what being a community organizer has to do with being president.

Lured by the McCain camp, Obama supporters engaged in an argument about who had more overall experience - the top of the Democratic ticket or the bottom of the GOP ticket. This diminished Obama.

Meanwhile, the media lit up in all their cultural-elite splendor.

Alaska? they sneered. It has the population of Las Vegas! Funny how the coastal elite only sneers at red states with small populations. Howard Dean hailed from a blue state with almost the same population as Alaska and was a national phenomenon and front-runner for the presidency. Joe Biden's Delaware has a similarly small population - but no mocking was forthcoming there.

Evangelicals will never vote for a woman who works! they declared. This from people who've likely never met an evangelical in their lives. They could barely contain themselves when they found out Gov. Palin's daughter was pregnant, so sure were they that evangelicals would hang her from the highest tree. When evangelical leaders expressed support, there was a palpable disappointment that Palin or her daughter wasn't branded with a scarlet letter.

They claimed that the Palin announcement was some desperate pick that came out of nowhere. Had they been doing their jobs, or even perusing The Weekly Standard or right-wing blogs, they'd have known that she was on the list.

Since they didn't know anything about her, they started making things up. Anything that fit the caricature of a right-wing hypocrite was thrown up with, seemingly, no fact-checking.

They said she opposes contraception, when she said in a campaign debate that she is pro-contraception. They said she cut funding for pregnant teens, when she provided a massive funding hike.

They accused her of cutting funding for mentally disabled children, when she raised it 175 percent over the former administration. She was said to have been a member of the wacky Alaska Independence Party; The New York Times had to run a retraction.

Like Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Palin has been deemed one of the GOP's rising stars. Since it's national reporters job to cover American politics, their ignorance of about her is distressing.

Most Americans think that the media are cheerleading for Obama, so they'll punish him for the reporters' and editors' sins.

So now he is weighted down with more baggage as he works to convince an important voting bloc that he and his party don't hold them in contempt.

The clock is ticking.

So true.

I also think its hilarious how the Obama campaign, Librodouches (this terms is really quite fitting, I think Ill embrace it), and the mainstream media are slamming Palin, when its McCain whos running for president. Pumped that finally the liberal media is truely shooting itself and their boy Obama in the foot.

It really pissed me off that because of the state of the media, the VP pick and the consquential outcome is affecting the election this much. It is supposed to be about the goddamn President and his campaigns ideas, at least thats how I feel. I think it is a shame that Obama is clearly suffereing due to this nonsense media-driven focus on the VP. Theres no doubt he hasn't handled it well, and there are legitimate questions arising about him from how he has responded, but I don't even know what way would be good at this point. Enough about Palin... this is fucking retarded. No sorry, 1/3rd of America is retarded.

This just in, Kristin Powers is a hudge republicunt...registerd dummicrat but everyone sees the truth...unless you can't read or see what she sells herself on. She's also from AK, so it's not surprising that she's coming to Palin's rescue. Bottom line, this is an opinion peice...not news.

BTW, Barry Obama does not run the media in the United States...the media is doing this because it's selling papers, advertisements, etc. etc. etc. Don't be a bunch of republidolts.

Neither are quotes like this:
Democratic Congressman Russ Carnahan on Tuesday – introducing Joe Biden at a campaign event – ripped into Palin’s record and punctuated it with this snarky jab. “There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick,” he said. Obama himself used similar langauge later in the day about the McCain-Palin reform rhetoric, saying "You can put lipstick on a pig," he said. "It's still a pig."

My question is: Do you think he wants to lose the womens' vote, or is he just that flip?

My question is: Do you think he wants to lose the womens' vote, or is he just that stupid?

Neither. Well, maybe the last one. I honestly don't think he, or many liberals for that matter, has a clue about what's actually going on.

I may actually watch some of the debates now.

Stupid was a very bad choice of words. Thus, edited to "flip." I know he can't be stupid. It's just mind boggling that those words would come out of his mouth at this stage in the game.

Bottom line, this is an opinion peice...not news.

No one quoted it as news, get your head out of your ass. This has been a typical rebuttal I've heard from both sides recently. NO SHIT IT IS HER OPINION, THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED AN OPED PIECE!

Jesus fucking christ both sides have blinders on. Just because you don't like the facts, doesn't make them not true. She is stating why she feels the Obama campaign made a mistake. Heaven forbid anyone think outside what everyone else is saying and actually say WHY Obama isn't getting the push almost everyone thought he was going to get.

I'm just indicating that you might want to conisder the source before you quote something as facts...but maybe you can't see around McCain's dick while your sucking it. Talk about blinders.

Here's a problem with your logic...you admit to quoting an OPED piece that you then reference as FACT (a.k.a. where you say "just because you don't like the facts" which you derived from an OPED). Think about it...doesn't work does it? Thanks for playing.

I understand the piece is an opinion, but it is wrong. Obama didn't blow it, Rove killed it again, by finding Palin for McCain, I really think he's just a step short of Lucifer.

We'll see how it all plays out, but the media's hard-on for Palin won't go away, and this will continue to stir the frenzied admiration of troglodytes and stupid women (no offense to the intelligent ones intended) nationwide.

You're dumb. Here's why: You cry about people using scources that you don't like (because you're a flaming librozombie) but when somebody cut & pastes something by Arianna Huffington your crying is nowhere to be heard. The whole thing has been done to death here, mostly by losers. You're a librofascist. We get it. Move on.

Grigory - niiice. It's not Obama's fault. He's just a VICTIM of the mean Republicans. Victimhood is for loosers. Which is exactly the case here.

Here is the problem with YOUR logic...I don't like McCain. Show me one time I supported ANYTHING ABOUT HIM OR HIS POLICIES PLEASE!!! Just because I don't want Obama doesn't mean I like McCain.

Were you born a fucking idiot or did you work your whole life at it?

That's Rove's plan, sad to see it working.

But in the end, if McCain wins there is no blaming Obama. There is only one reason McCain's demos took a jump: Ammericans are swayed by the most fleeting superficialities, and don't take the election of their leader seriously at all.

And please don't anyone go on about how the fucking people in the heartland connect with her - that's just another way of saying they are stupid fucks who don't need any more in a leader than someone "just like them".
Does anyone really think the majority of respondants to these polls have looked long and hard at Palin and her record? Her abilities and record don't even factor into her appeal as vice-president - and that is just terrifying.

You're right and that is why the dems picked a black man for POTUS when he WASN'T THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE. See how that works? Both sides use *gasp* public opinion to help them make stupid decisions.

Whatever happens in the election, I probably will not understand why. When it comes down to it, I think a lot of people don't make objective, rational decisions based upon fact gathering and election issues.

This election is turning into a popularity contest based upon the image of the VP nominee of the GOP. From my perspective, it's plain and simple that McCain picked his VP for likability and image because he felt like he needed to take a risk. Maybe I'll be surprised by Palin debates and interviews. The thought of her as VP to a 72 year-old President-elect scares me.

I hope Obama pulls his shit together for this time forward in the campaign. America needs a leader, not someone who picked a popular runningmate.

Have you watched Obama in an unscripted interview? It's quite embarrassing given all the intelligence assigned to him by the tgr clowns. He's as engaging and eloquent as George Bush, covered in slober poop. Give it a rest, he's going to lose because he sucks

I am not sure who i am gonna vote for yet but if Obama starts pulling this type of shit (granted i did not hear what was actually said by either side). If every time he (probably more like his supporters) cries racism every time he gets slammed i dont think he can handle the job of president! whats he gonna say when someone international leader (maybe russian) slams him--is he gonna step up or just cry bloody murder

The biggest problem with the Dems this time around is their attitude that anyone supporting Palin and McCain must be stupid. Actually, that was sort of their attitude last time, but the guy they had running was a twit with a twat for a wife.

Maybe if they would curb that attitude, they wouldn't turn off the average American. Just step into any Walmart in the country. That is who they need to win over. Not a fun job. Palin breaks the mold in a big way.

I do find it amazing, though, that she is proving to be a brilliant choice, and the dems are fueling the fire. "Give 'em enough rope to hang themselves."

He shoulda picked Hillary as a running mate.

There would be no Palin had he done that.

He is acting like he is president already, he seems to have forgotten he still has to win the job.
Hillary/Obama would have walked into the White House.

I've said it before...Michelle Obama is the Yoko Ono of the democratic party.

Coming from someone I know, it is much worse than that. This is someone that ran a very high end retail store in Chicago, and has met both of them on several occasions. He liked Obama, but Michelle was another story. I trust his opinion. He is as gay as the night is dark, and (understandably) does not tend to judge people without getting to know them. I was shocked at his opinion of her.
