Whats the deal with them? doesn't the car have to be totaled for it to get one?

found a good deal on a car with a salvage title, i called the guy who did the repairs and he said he only needed to replace the front bumper and right side panel er something....no mechanical damage...is this possible??

no its probably not possible. You won't be able to get a loan for the car from a bank or any other institution to pay for the car with a salvage title. One thing I know from one of my accidents was that the cost of the car was less than it would be to fix it, from the adjustor. We took it to the scrap yard, got a receipt saying we dumped the car. But actually just got it back from the yard with the salvage title and then got a cheaper estimate and got it repaired, which was easier than getting another car.

Salvage titles are tricky. Its one thing if you do the work yourself or know the damage first hand, but its another if you buy it without knowing its history. It might be alright, or it might be real bad. With cars nowadays its easy for a small accident to cause serious damage. I'd pass on it if you are a car jong.

Don't do it. I get to see a lot of salvage title crap now that I'm at an independent shop. Last week I worked on a 99' 328, the car looked pretty good from the outside. When I got the car up in the air it was obvious it was once two cars. There was a seam in the middle of the car where two cars had been made into one, it wasn't pretty. This car had plenty of electrical problems and a gas tank that was basically hanging there.

Most salvage title cars have been hit, hard. The shops that put these things back together aren't usually staffed by the most competent "professionals." Next to our shop is a body shop that does this, they have 10-15 wrecks sitting out in their yard at any one time. When they're through with them they look ok from the outside. But, from the looks of these dudes, there is no way in hell I'd buy a car they put together.

Plus, as others have mentioned financing is tough to get. Re-selling it will be next to impossible. Bottom line, don't do it.

Another possible way to end up with a salvage title is if the car is stolen and paid for by the insurance company as unrecoverable, but is later recovered after having been partially or wholly stripped.

Z - I'm driving my Jeep with a salvage title now. Totalled it last fall and the damages were around 8K. Tom and I got it back on the road for $190 and I pocketed a nice chunk. My damages were all superficial body work except the AC condensor. Like someone else said, you gotta know the car pretty well, and if you total it again, I think most insurance companies might only pay off for salvage value. It needs to be sound and a hell of a deal.
