View Full Version : Bands that were great and never sucked!!!

Okay, I'm joining on the bandwagon creating a variation on this topic.
Some great bands sucked at one point, one of the reasons was they kept producing stuff way past their prime. The classic example would be the Rolling Stones. Some bands never had a chance to suck, simply because the split, someone died and called it quits, whatever the reason.
Here is my choice:
The Smiths

how long does the band have to suck for before it is considered to have sucked?
I'm assuming that sucking for a couple of songs (but not a whole album) doesn't count...
Right in line w/ AIC and Soundgarden - Nirvana was pretty consistent

Gonna have to disagree. I love Tull, but saw them in '96 during the Roots to Branches tour. That album is fucking horrible!

Nope, they suck. They were the New Kids on the Bock for stupid baby boomer hippies and their stupid drugs.

Gotta throw Bob into this mix. I would also nominate Guns and Roses, Dr John, Taj Mahal, The Radiators, North Mississippi All Stars, Jimi, The Dead and Widespread Panic (although I have mixed feelings about this last one).
hating on peoples music is soy by the way~

This may be the dumbest thing ever posted in this forum. Everyone... I mean everyone in Rock Music agrees that Revolver and Sgt. Peppers... not only changed the rules, but changed the game completely. Show me one weak album in this discography, hell just one that's not stuffed with classics!
* Please Please Me (Parlophone, 1963)
* With The Beatles (Parlophone, 1963)
* A Hard Day's Night (Parlophone, 1964)
* Beatles for Sale (Parlophone, 1964)
* Help! (Parlophone, 1965)
* Rubber Soul (Parlophone, 1965)
* Revolver (Parlophone, 1966)
* Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Parlophone, 1967)
* Magical Mystery Tour (U.S. only. Released as a Double EP in the UK) (Capitol, 1967)
* The Beatles ("The White Album") (Apple, 1968)
* Yellow Submarine (Apple, 1969)
* Abbey Road (Apple, 1969)
* Let It Be (Apple, 1970)

Tool - I still love their sound.
Pearl Jam - yes I still listen to them.
Alice in Chains - right up until Staley passed on.
Beetles - Got better with age or maybe it was the drugs.
Led Zepplin - like the Beetles always rocked.

I would also nominate Guns and Roses
While G n' R is clearly one of the greatest bands of all time, Spaghetti Incident, some of II, and this Chinese Democracy debacle suck huge balls. Buckethead, while great in his own right, is not and never will be Slash.

absolutely hands down the dumbest ever.
only thing i would add is that when you start naming the beatles individual albums for their importance.....it leaves other albums out. yea sgt.pepper and revolver were prolly the biggest, but when a beatles record was released it was a huge deal every time, every album changed the world.

I am so sick of people name dropping The Beatles. I seriously want to smash people over the head with their guitar when they cover the band. I am sick of hearing about their songs that I can't actually listen to their songs. I'd probably listen to the band more if people would plain shut up about them.
Their last live show was August 29, 1966. I'd have been pissed if I were a Beatles fan when they retreated.

Your point? They were busy recording the greatest albums ever and didn't have time to tour. They weren't the Grateful Dead.

I agree. I'm tired of hearing them and hearing about them. But they most definately did not suck. They were/are the opposite of suck.

WTF is it with The Beatles haters.
I can pick any one of the albums Tippster listed, sit down, listen to it, and find myself amazed at the brilliance and timelessness of the music and lyrics. Even though I am familiar with their music, each listening inspires feelings I had when I heard it for the first time.
That is what timeless art does.
I dunno, maybe The Beatles haters also tire of Mozart, Bernini, and Van Gogh.
The Beatles deserve to be on this list as their influence is greater than their music, as great as that is.

How could I forget Leviathan? He recorded a bunch of really creepy and great albums and then quit while he was ahead, unlike Xasthur (who he was often compared to). Here's to obscure black metal guys who stopped at their peak! Hails to thou!

The need to have lived long enough or stayed together long enough to potentially suck. None of the above did.
I vote "The Who", name one bad album. Even Meaty Beaty Big and Bounce didn't suck, it wasn't one of their better ones, but it didn't suck.
And for a band that is going on over forty years, with some highs and lows, but never sucked I'll add "Little Feat"

Face Dances and It's Hard, despite having a fcouple of great tunes, sucked in general. 2006's Endless Wire was just sad.

I'm not a big fan, but I have to admit the Beatles broke-up before they sucked. A few more years and they would have been toast -- look at Wings.
Oh yeah, grandma says Elvis. I beg to differ with her on this one though...
