Look High Din binders

Okay, I went with the SPs. Now I need binders. I have a line on some cheap Look ZRVs. What's the story with the brakes. Can they be replaced. I know Nobis, etc., use them on fatties. Can they be sent in to Dynastar to be retrofitted. Any help appreciated.

as for the binders, damn i'm a salomon high din guy, don't know much about high din looks. i'm sure there is a way to put on a wide break or switch the break arms or something. with salamons you can get a wide break and twist the break arms out of the housing then put the wide arms on your old break platforms. seems like you should be able to do the same with the looks. or just switch the whole damn unit.

Shouldn't be too hard. Just contact Look, I'm sure they can help you. Most Brakes can be replaced fairly simply.

Dude I am pretty shure that on the ZR's you can get them to come stock with the wider breaks, if you spec that on the order, BUT I am pretty shure that the breaks are not user replaceable on the ZR so you are stuck with em what ever way you order em.

I have the P18's on my G4's and they have the exact same heil piece as the Zr's just a more streamlined looking metal toe piece instead of the older style. Supposedly you can order the Zr's to come with the Wide breaks but you cant with the P18's. I dunno why, but that is what Dynastar Canada told me last year when they hooked me up.

BTW if you get a line on some wide breaked ZR's LET ME KNOW!!! I need to replace the p14's on my exploders with them. the plastic toe pieces on the p14's keep blowing up on me.

I tried to get a wide brake for my old ZR (sme heel as the new ZR) and every shop told me I was SOL, that LOOK won't sell them. I know LOOK makes the wide brake, but they make it VERY hard to get.

I even called the look racing department. No such luck. From what I understand you gotta be spancered to get these.

I just went through this with a guy I sold some ZRs to. He's on one of the boards but I never did catch his screen name. I got a hold of our Look guy who got in touch with the warehouse and they say no go. Look was notoriously behind the eight ball for keeping pace with the wide skis even though Dynastar created a lot of the trend. The ZRs are based on the old binding and the wide brake was never available then and I doubt they did anything else. My experience is strictly in Canada though and sometimes states side will get some different stuff. I think Teamdirt got a hold of the same bindings we did and from the same source so I'm not sure you'll get further that way. Sometimes the tech guys have some stuff hidden away they don't share though.

Bent the brakes on some s900 equipes out to fit Pistols with no real problems. Not great stopping power, most likely, but they only came off once and that was (surprise) in deep pow.

Stop crashing on groomers and you won't have a problem with riding bent stock brakes. :p

Check the preview for Oakley's Session 1242 for an example of what happens when you lose a Pistol at high speed in deep pow. (Cork 720 to 6 switch supermans to almost getting killed by his own runaway ski. Heh.)

after trying to get wide brakes from look i ended up bending the brakes on my zrv's to fit my nordica w105's without too much trouble. i removed the brakes from the heel piece (the plate on the underside is removeable, just do not break the tabs that hold it in place). i have also know a guy who mounted them on his FFL's then bent the brakes after.

also. never get your thumb caught in the heel piece when its colsed, its bad

So if I gotta bend'em, what's the technique? You take them off the binders, then what. I'm a binding brake bending JONG, what can I say.

okay boss, remove brake from heelpiece. put brake in a large vise, make sure to clamp it down TIGHT. use a long piece of pipe (cut off ski pole will work, but look brakes are hardened steel and can ovalize the poll lessening your torque) to increase youre leverage. bend the brake very slowly, its not that easy, once you get it straight move it in the clamp to where you're desired bend is ( i think for my 105's i widened each side by like 3/8" or something, measure) and re bend the brake to 90degrees again. once you have gotten them bent you get to try for a long time to get them back in the heel piece with the spring and the bottom plate. it helps to have two pairs of hands for this part.

whatever happens, do not get your thumb stuck in the heel piece when its closed, ive said before, and i'll say it again: its bad.

also if you snap your brakes while bending them, no biggie dude, everyone knows brakes are for pussies anyways.

You can say that again. Getting the brake back in place and putting that metal plate back on was a real bitch. It's a two person job for sure. I just bent mine out a little for my G4's. A 95mm waist is a different story though....
