View Full Version : Suggest a replacement for my broken crankset.

On a chill ride recently I managed to clip a rock (at nearly coasting speed) and strip one of my Blindside's crank arms. They were this year's XT, and now I'm trying to figure out what to replace them with. Should I go with Hone or should I just bite the bullet and put some a Saint crankset on there? I'm leaning toward Hone because... It's much lighter, it has the steel inserts which I find to be the only weak point of the XT, and I only weight 130lb which makes Saint seem a bit overkill.
Weight is definitely a priority, but I don't want to keep replacing broken parts after barely clipping a rock.

I have heard nothing but good things about the FSA Gravity Light cranks. 180 on Bluesky. Definitely cheaper than Saint.

Hone and Gravity lights would be the top of my list too.
If you go Hone, make sure you get the two ring version even if you aren't going to use their bashguard. The 3 ring version doesn't have the steel pedal insert. I made this mistake.

I would third the Hone 2 ring and Bash or Gravity Lite route.

Curious shorty, what length cranks are you running on that bad boy?
BTW, hope your arm is healing up well.

Dang dude you break almost as many parts as Mr. AG, and he probably has you by 80 lbs!

I've been beating on the older saints for two years and haven't had one problem. Haven't had to even touch them. 1 vote for saint. I hear good things about the hones too, haven't used them though.

You should put a pedal thread insert in them and keep riding them.
Should cost you about $8
I have one on two of my bikes.....one of them with xt cranks.

Thanks for the lowdown on that one. I would have been :cussing: if I ordered those and a pair of black XT cranks showed up at my place.

It looks like Go Ride can hook me up with this move. If it works, you just saved me tons of money (Thanks man!). If it doesn't, then I'll just hook up some Hone cranks and call it good.
Thanks,
Adam

It will work.
If not you can sell me your 'unusable' cranks for $20 :D
