View Full Version : This Cove Shocker is one sweet ride

This is Tom from Montana. I've been on one of the latest batches of the new Cove Shocker for about two weeks now. While running it with a ’09 Fox 40rc2 + DHX5 coil. Powered and Stopped by our friends at Avid and all the trimmings from FSA’s Gravity group. After feeling it out and putting it into many different situations, I can say this. It’s defiantly not the breed of DH bike of our earlier years of monster linkage machines that would send you hurtling threw the air like a mechanical bull ‘sending you’ if your weight wasn't centered on landing. As my quiver of bikes has morphed for many seasons its awesome to see how our small bicycle industry has grown and implements some amazing manufacturing techniques. That once would have cost bazillions of dollars for the little bike companies to produce. The thought and design that went into the Shocker, over at the same old good guys at Cove, is evident the second I sat on it. More neutral/centered in balance than most 40lb+/190mm+ sleds and still gets away with a nice short top tube. (I ride a Med. Frame size and I’m 6’0.) I loved throwing this thing around like a toy. I'm sold. The rearward traveling wheel path is obviously efficient to pedal but is much suppler and more predictable than other brands 'multi pivot independent rear ends'. Say that five times fast dude. The first day I rode it I told myself I was just going to get a feel for her and ride some woopty trails near town but No. Some dudes had come along and resurrected the old road gap drop that usually takes a few sightings to 'nut up' to before I'll giver a go. Its not that I was feeling particularly saucy this day, it’s that the bike really was feeling that good. I worked for a suspension manufacture for a few years on top of being a race and shop mechanic and my shniz was dialed so I wasn't worried. Like buttta, touch down, and with a head angle like this any high speed run out is still a one finger brake scrub. So yah, I'm going to be telling some people about this bike..

Sounds like an ad, but I love mine as well. I just wish i could swap out my heavy 888RC for a 888 ATA WC to lighten it up a bit. Mine's at 45lbs.

Cove isn't tech savy enough to have a SPAM bot.

Dude. Paragraphs are your friend.

It sounds like a nice ride. It's also one of the few bikes they've produced with a name that won't instantly rule it out from being stocked by 90% of stores (see chapter 2 of "How to Commit Sales Suicide" by Cove Bikes).

Cove has the coolest names in the biz. If a shop is too tigh ass to carry them because of the names they suck and don't fit with the whole Cove image anyways.

not everybody knows what a shocker or a sanchez is

the shop I worked at was owned by a baptist (altho we also had more freaks than any other shop ) and one day some of them were talking about how its nice that cove was finally coming out with bikes that didnt have sexual conotations in every name

the mechanic with the flaming red hair and I just looked at one another and chuckled

The Cove image thing is what's covered in chapter 1 of the aforementioned book. I've spoken to to at least a couple of would be customers who were really turned off by the bro-brah attitude at their Deep Cove store and I could definitely see it being a turn off for a significantly large segment of the market. This isn't an entirely bad thing -- they have a particular niche they're targeting and they're staying true to that. The downside is that they limit their ability to capitalize on success and grow into a broader market. Cove has been around since the 80's and are still a tiny niche manufacturer at best.

I think Transition is a great example of a bike company that looks to be very savvy in growing their business from their PNW roots.

But. Hey, it's a free market and I say bring on the porn theme bikes. I want to see a DH bike called "Lovelace" (because it's all about going down), a trail bike called "Slut" (it does anything for anyone), and an XC bike called "Frigid" (its all about uptight type A types in skin-tight spandex who almost never go down).

I am trying to picture 14 -24 yr olds males with their shoes undone & their pants hangin down off their asses telling you "dude ,I just don't like coves image"

A friend of mine (middle aged female nurse ) had the " hummer " which could also be a large gas guzzling truck

some folks say there is no such thing as bad advertising

From what I hear I think the market share they have is about all Chaz and Gabe can handle.

Cove hasn't changed their website in like 4 years. In their early days wasn't the deep cove shop only open like 3 hours a day a few days a week? I don't think they are too concerned with "capitalizing."

shirk

Actually they recently changed the website to an "under construction" page. Just a single page with an email address.

The website joke has become the ongoing dead horse to beat on over at NSMB.

For the record this wasn't an ad I just really like my shocker. Most reviews are a little clowded so I thouoght I'd giver a try. If you can't handle the tecnical gargin go buy a Santa Cruz Bullet with a box build and call it good. I am closing my business and selling off left over product here, but long work hours and lack of being computer savy have prevented me from joining this Forum for years. Whats with all the smack?

I am good friends with Tom... I can assure you he is not selling that Cove and MSI did not carry them.

He is an outstanding guy, and one hell of a rider.

But yea Tom, paragraphs....

The Shocker may be a sweet ride, but Cove has terrible customer service. I will not buy another Cove until they get their act together!
