Our local ski shop in MASS is selling these things quite reasonable priced - what's the deal with these things, are they mass-produced?

theyre cheap, and plastic. and not a terrible ride considering the price. good to learn on, never ding...but once you get on a real board youll never want to ride it again. i learned on a 7'9, and still have it to let my friends use, i might actually pull it out sometime this summer if its decent size surf and cruise around on it. A couple of guys at the spot where I usually surf ride the 10"0 as their everyday board and like it.
FOr a starter board, cant really go wrong.

i had a bic board. unfortunately, its easy to ding and within one hour i had to re shape and glass the rail. also, they delaminate real easy. if youre not looking to surf hard core and dont roll with the cutbacks or slashes, then these are your board--you should be fine with them up to a 4 foot swell if youre a beginneer. if not, not worth money, get something a little more stronger

the core of the bic board is standard foam--just like in regular boards. when it delaminates or welds up due to underwater presssure, you can fill it with sun cure or any standard surfboard filler--just like regular boards. because it has a molded plastic shell, the only way to reproduce the shell exactly to standard is to fill it with the polyethylene product they use and mold it the same way. since this process is a bitch and no shop has the proper equipment and tools, you can reglass and get the same effects with 4 coats of 2 oz resin on the top, under a fiberglass patch, all under the filler. sure, it wont look as white as the board did, it would turn out to be a light yellow color, but reglassing it with f.glass results in it becoming more leak proof and a more solid build
