View Full Version : Anyone running an internal geared hub?

I've been thinking about selling my Redline Monocog to get something with some gears to commute on/fuck around on now that my commute is longer with more hills. So I was poking around on the web and found someone who put a internal geared hub on their monocog for commuting and thought hmm, I could do that.

Anyone in TGR land running an internal geared hub? Any thoughts? Is it worth it for a low maintenance option to get me around town??

I have a 8 speed, disc brake one, I just can't get it to work 100% as the old school bike I'm using it with has elevated chain stays.

actually thinking of selling it (wheel and all). I'ts hand built to a mavic T520 rim (29er, 700c, etc)

hub is $140ish retail.

Why can't you get it to work 100%? It won't shift right because of the elevated chain stays? I don't get it. Please explain.

the shifting lever attaches to the hub, with a level that only attaches at one angle (for normal chain stays) I've had to bend the shifter lever to a strange angle, for the elevated stays that go up at 30', and still doesn't work great.

I'm a complete bike tech JONG, how do you get something like that to shift? Or is it automatic?

it is an internal hub, so all the shifting is inside the hub, go derailer to hit, no chain to fall off, etc

I had a 3 speed internal on my cruiser. It didn't really help all that much. It wasn't low enough for real hill climbing. I was thinking of getting a 8 or 6 speed internal but the guy at the bike shop talked me out of it. He said with it, my hi/low would be the same I would just have more in between which was worthless.

I have a shimano nexus 7 speeds on my city cruiser. It's pretty cool to be able to downshift in 1st when stopped at a traffic light, no doubt about it. No maintenance / reliability issue, but I'm not a heavy or daily user.
First gear could be lower and 7th higher, but it's still the best solution for relaxed urban riding, as far as I'm concerned. But YMMV, I'm a very mellow rider.
A rohloff (http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/)could be the way to go, for a wider range...

(To get a nexus on a cheap, no-big-deal-if-stolen, city cruiser is the reason why I bought this bike :

stealthb4:

it is used just a few rides (plus a LOT of tickering on the bike stand). $200? ebay gets a few and they are $300+

shifter, it comes with the one shown, not sure on that pull ratios if it is shimano, or sram, or unique to it's self.

Get up there bitch.

Besides the Rohloff anyone know of an internal geared hub that's worth a shit for mtb riding? I've got a Surly 1x1 that needs to be ridden but my knees want a few gears.

Search MTBR or shoot Marty at www.theprairiepeddler.com an e-mail....contact info is on the page.

He setup a Haro Mary and now Jamis SS with a Shimano Alfine rear hub. Seven speed if I remember correctly. A bit portly but he had very positive things to say about it.

I dont know anything about how well internal hubs work because i've never used one for more than a quick ride around. But this reminds me of this (http://tomi-mcmillar.blogspot.com/2009/10/parts-list-for-alfine.html) post.

What is this hammershift you speak of?

I did some googlin' and ended up looking at Harley parts. Checked around Sheldon Brown's world and didn't see anything there.

truvativ hammerschmidt

Basically a internal 2 speed crankset.

They are spendy but seem to work well.

There's a guy on the Knolly mtbr forum running a Delirium with Hammerschmidt and the Alfine rear and it sounds like he is liking it, might be worth a look.

Hammerschmidt wont work on a monocog, unless there is a way around the mounting?..... don't you need chain guide tabs?

^^ ISCG adapter. We talked about it here a while back and apparently it works pretty well according to Marshall.

The problem with all the internal rear hubs other then Rohloff is they really aren't designed for the torque loads a mt bike goes through. Apparently SRAM is working on one but no date for release yet.

Thing looks sweet, seems to be some controversy on using the adpater.
