New $20 bill hits circulation
09:56 AM PDT on Thursday, October 9, 2003
SEATTLE - Your green $20 bills won’t be so green anymore.
New colorful $20 bills go into circulation Thursday. They’re tinted with a dash of color and other features aimed at thwarting forgers to counterfeit the bills. The frame around Andrew Jackson’s portrait is also gone.
The Federal Reserve is calling the bills the "most secure note the U.S. government has ever produced."
To kick things off in the Northwest, Jim Whitaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest, will spend Seattle’s first new $20 bill at a Starbucks.

The new $20 bill entered circulation Thursday, October 8, 2003.
New versions of the $50 and $100 bills are expected to follow in 2004 and 2005. The Treasury Department said it will be updating its bills every seven to 10 years to stay a step ahead of high-tech counterfeiters.
There will be no recall or devaluation of the old bills. As the new currency is phased in, the old notes will be retired by the Federal Reserve when they are returned through the banking system.

I've been very upset with this. American money is supposed to be green. There's a certain elegance to green. It makes a statement of simplicity...class...strength...and p..o..w..e..r!!!! Ooops, lost myself for a second there. :D Anyway, color belongs in third world countries that use monopoly money like Nigeria, Russia, and Europe. ;)

What about Lady Godiva? Hmmm.....?
And who cares if it's not green. Before the stupid euro came around, Holland had all sorts of colored bills (like monopoly). It made it easier to differeniate between different bills while you were stoned in Amsterdam.:D

anyone find it ironic that Andrew Jackson, the man who did more to destroy the federal banking system in this country is on a federal note?

So what's to stop a counterfeiter from keeping on making copies of the old currency and just wrinkling it up to look old? Is there a code of conduct a counterfeiter lives by that says they must stop making the old money when a new version comes out?

Yes surprisingly enough they hold themselves to a severely strict code of conduct that emphasizes among other things complete fairness in cheating.

Wait until you see the new $20 bill TV commercials. Do they really need to advertise $20 bills? I'll take as many as they want to give me.

When you consider most currency is only in circulation for about two years ($100's which counterfeiters prefer to make have a longer life span), there is a point where your money will look really out of place and increase your chances of getting caught.
Of course you can always go to the rural parts of the south to pass your currency but, if you ask them to make change for your twenty dollar bill you may get back Confederate money for change.

That's surprising. I just looked at my wallet and every bill is older that 5 years. Granted most of them are ones and I doubt someone wants to counterfeit a one.

Proper money? Dude, that picture of the queen is damn homely...not to say the people on U.S. money are real attractive, either, but at least we have some variety!
The other problem with your money is you can't call it "dead presidents."
Way back when ........... when I was in college I had a part time job at a local clothing store. One day a couple of men in dark suits came in and told us a counterfeit bill had been traced to our store. The showed us a photomontage and asked us if any of the individuals looked familiar. It was very strange - the G men were almost comical. They showed us the bill - it was very thick and kind of glossy. Ever since then I've been more aware of the "feel" of bills. Wouldn't it just suck to be passed a fake bill and be out the money?
While traveling through South America I would get asked by merchants for "older" bills - they were afraid new crisp bills were fake. Eventually I had to go through all my bills and crumple them up to make them look "used."
Speaking of pretty money - I miss the Canadian $2 bill with the robin on the back - cute little robin.

Funny, everyone bitching about the new colors on the front of the bill, when it is for the most part black.
And I'll second the motion that NZ money is sweet. Even in the drunkest of stages you know exactly how much you are handing the bartender via easy color coding.
