Denizens of the Fishing Forum, I hardly know ye. For those of us more concerned with Sprockets, or Skiing, or even Padded Room action, think you could throw out some ideas for the fisherpeople in our lives? I'm trying to get something for my dad, who unfortunately (or fortunately) can get what he wants. This makes it a bit hard to find the ol' christmas gift. He's into fishing from his kayak on streams with a spinning rod and is starting to get into fly fishing. He doesn't have any specific fly gear, but I think a rod/reel is too much of a personal choice for a present. What else is there? I'm thinking about a good pair of polarized glasses, which I think he lacks. Also, there's a few nice cloudveil vests which could be had for cheap right now with the 45% discount (thinking: http://www.cloudveil.com/mens/angling/nunya+vest--CV00082/). What else is good?

I guarantee you no trout fisherman has one of these. but i think any trout fisherman who tries it will never fish without again. especially wade fishing.
i absofuckinglutely love my patagonia fishing vest/pack.
but personally, im not a big fan of the one willy joe pack i have tried. the bags on the front of the pack were way too big and got in the way of casting, it had some sort of a 'tippet management system' that didnt work and was nothing but a pain. pack itself was small, and no way to remove the pack and just have a chest pack for shorter days.
it was this one: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/eccStoreFront/stp/product_images/72754/f_72754_1.jpg
on the other hand, its almost 50% off at STP (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/4305,72754_William-Joseph-Fishing-Pack-Coastal-.html)

If someone got me a nice little flask I'd be pretty psyched. :) monogrammed, or with an etching of a striper...

Along the "presents" line, We went to a craft fair today and a woman there just got into fly fishing, but she is a painter. She took Altoids boxes and painted flies on them, then lined the insides with foam to make little fly boxes. They look cool and I got them as little gifts for my dad, uncles etc. along with their other presents.
You can't just show up in here without knowing the secret handshake.
If he's just starting to flyfish, some casting instruction will help with the frustrations of the learning curve. Lots of Dvd's out there, Lefty Kreh has several good ones.
Many fly shops have casting classes if he's more that type. Flyfisher's love gear and he's apt to run into peeps there that will give him equipment tips.
That's pretty insightful of you to realize that rod and reel selection is very personal and specific.
You idea of sunglasses is a good one, it scares me to throw a fly without them but some folks do.

A nice pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses is always a great gift. They are my personal favorite.
William Joseph makes a lightweight packable rain jacket that costs $60.00. It packs up tiny, and really does keep you dry in a heavy downpour. That would be a sweet gift. Something he would not know he needed until he got it. I use mine as a windbreaker on chilly aftrenoons too. It really is a great little piece of equipment.

along the lines that 72 was sayin, i definately would say a nice fly box. maybe buy a dozen or so flys to put inside and get him started. also, there are a lot of little things to buy if he's just gettin into flyfishin...leader, line, forceps, indicators, fly floatant, lead weight, etc.

Bump from the depths...
Sorry to leach off this forum
My Dad is turning 60 and he is the impossible guy to buy for. He fishes for a few weeks of the year in Alaska, salmon, halibut, (spinner?, not fly). Any suggestions for shirts? Waders (I don't know if he even needs new ones)? He generally angles more to the hunting/fishing side like Cabela's than the nice shirt side like patagonia/cloudveil but I think I could maybe get him to try that stuff. Would like to keep the gift <$300. Any specific waders on STP that are really good?
Thanks for any help!
i just saw some cloudveil waders on STP that looked pretty nice.

Fishing in Alaska I guess the weather could be iffy. If someone ever bought me packable waterproof pants and or top I would use it frequently. It should be washable and a little better than just thin nylon as that fishing could be a little messy and lots of rubbing up against the gunnels.
Also, may I reintroduce the flask for consideration, even if only my wife happens to be reading this. In your Dad's case, engrave it with a halibut or a salmon and maybe include with the gift either his favorite bottle or a new bottle of something he might find interesting of his type of spirit. If he's a gin drinker like my father, then scratch the flask suggestion and just get him a big cup, hold the ice. :D

If he's just getting into flyfishing, get him FLIES and a FLYBOX.
He won't be dissapointed. As a flyfisherman, you can *never* have too many!
or if you think he's interested in getting into fly tying, get him a vice. you can get a pretty nice one for less than 50 bucks.

How about a membership in Trout Unlimited. He'll get some free stuff, a mag every so often, and the opportunity to meet up with more experienced anglers. I think there still giving away the 100 best rivers in America book but I could be wrong. Check their website.

if you can swing it a rod and reel is a great present, I mean they are like skis you can never have to many plus its always nice to have a special rod that was given to you by someone.
Other Ideas:
-CF Designs fly box stocked with flies
-A Wading Jacket
-Beer
