SPOKANE, Wash. -- A woman was chased, run over and killed by a van allegedly driven by her estranged husband as their children watched, police said.
Andrea Atkinson was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after she was struck Monday evening, police said.
Richard Atkinson, 32, was pursued by nearby residents and held until police arrived. He was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday in Spokane County Superior Court and ordered held on $1 million bail.
The 29-year-old victim and Atkinson had filed for divorce in February, according to the county clerk's office.
Police Sgt. Larry Evans said the man tracked the woman to a friend's home Monday evening. She tried to drive away, taking three of the couple's four children with her. The man had the fourth child in his van, Evans said.
During a chase, the woman's vehicle was struck several times by the van and forced off the road, police said.
The woman got out of her vehicle with the three children and ran toward a nearby home, Evans said. The man then drove through a fence and ran her over, he said.
The children were taken to a friend's home, police said.
