Late March Madness

By: Rick Johnston |  Thursday, April 03, 2008

It was a bit of a wait here for the skies to clear again, but when they finally did patience paid off in a BIG way.  This time of year everyone seems to be off everywhere getting it done,  while Ian Macintosh has been here in the Pemberton Backcountry silently CRUSHING IT.  Here’s a few shots of some of the lines that have gone down over the last little bit, including a notorious double that no skier has ever done (only talked about after 2 shreds hit it 7 years ago).  It’s called Papa Jordan and in 10 years of filming, it is by far the rowdiest line I have ever seen go down.  A 45ft. cliff to mandatory 80ft. rock ride – INSANE.

Blue Skies and Broken Bones

By: Rick Johnston |  Monday, February 25, 2008

Well,  the last couple weeks have had it share of ups and downs,  here in B.C..
Dana got back from  from the U.S.  and the skies turned blue.  Two days later, Ian took a crazy fall that would have torn any other skier in half.  Turns out he walked away with severely bruised ribs and a broken thumb.   This will probably put him on the shelf for a month though, which is a drag, because not only is he the burliest skier I have ever seen,  he  was having a great year, and is also probably the biggest team player I have ever worked with.  The guy  is  constantly either lining up shots for other people,  or patiently waiting on a ridge for an hour and a half in -18 , while other shots are going down and not getting bummed.   Anyway  it’s a drag he’s got some down time, and let’s hope he heals up fast, because the season is still early.

Cutting it Close

By: Rick Johnston |  Thursday, February 07, 2008

Word up from Canada.  Just out of the Pemberton/Whistler Area there are 6 or 7 REALLY SICK sled zones, for filming.  I’ve been through just about every inch of every one of them, over  the last 10 or so years and Rutherford, has always been my favorite for getting the banger shots.   Until Now.   We broke into a new zone a couple of weeks ago that is $$$ CRAZY.  I promised to keep my mouth shut about it, and I also promised a photographer to not show any photos of it, yet.  So here are a couple of MEDIUM shots from our travels, in the meantime.

DEEP in the Canadian backcountry

By: Rick Johnston |  Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Western Canada has been getting hammered since the season started, and after some of the clouds finally split, we headed out to Rutherford Creek, DEEP in the Canadian backcountry.  Breaking into some of these zones in 3ft of fresh, is no easy task.  But with just Dana and Ian for now, it was about as sweet as shooting  gets.  Here’s a quick peep.
